Question:
Caloried counting?

I was told not to count calories or gm of sugar but to ONLY WATCH MY PROTEIN and to make sure i get 50gm per day... I feel as thought calorie intake should me monitored also but i dont know the calorie range i should be shooting for... Dec 4 i am released to work out and up until all i could do is walk. Is it true that i still have to burn more than i eat to lose weight? even post op?    — LauraMarie (posted on November 27, 2008)

You should totally watch the sugar intake. This change in diet is in effect the Atkins diet--cutting out the carbs while at the same time ramping up the protein to kick you body into the reaction of using up body fat. Not restricting the sugar intake foils the effort--plus honestly, not monitoring your sugar intake means not changing bad eating habits that got us into a bad state in the first place. My surgeon and Nut both stated that I should avoid anything that has more than 7g carbs per serving. Since March 4th, 2008 I've now lost 102 lbs; I had the VBG.

My nut told me not to have anything over 10 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fat with 3 meals and 1 snack a day. Each meal should be 15-20 grams of protein, with snack being about 10 grams of protein. I know everyone is different, but hope this helps some. Good Luck!!!

Towards the end of your first year, the weight gain slows way...WAAAAAAAAY down...and some people fear they will not lose all their weight or even begin regain....SO at that point it is WISE to know what you are consuming and what percentage is going to fat, fiber, carbs, sugar, complex carbs and protein...If you have no troubles don't worry so much and let things progress naturally!

I was told to focus on eating my protein plus a tiny bit of anything else I can handle. Nothing fried or too high in sugar, of course. So I don't worry about the calories too much, but choose low-fat or healthy things for my few non-protein bites-- if I finish my protein. I'm 6 wks out of RNY and have lost 42 lbs post-op.

I was told to get 50 gr protein per day and eat approx 800 calories. I drank 1 protein shake that had 50 gr protein (EAS-cant remember how many calories) and then ate alot of sf foods and was able to stay under 800 calories. I am 11 wks and still try to stay 800-1000 calories. It is hard and takes willpower. Good luck to you.
