Question:
I had Lap RNY on Nov 13, '08 and have lost 117lbs.

I have hit a plateau and for the past 2 weeks cannot seem to lose anymore. I'm getting so frustrated. Also, i'm losing my hair like crazy. Please help!!    — tyrn04 (posted on April 1, 2009)

You're complaining about 117 pounds in 4 1/2 months? That sounds like a good wt loss to me. Nothing is on your profile page. No surgery date, starting wt or BMI, etc. Personally I'd be happy with that wt loss. I thought I did good with 100 pounds in 7 months. The challenge is up to you. Your habits and following the surgeon's protocol must have worked in your favor to this point. Plateaus are common in the wt loss process. Hair loss is an unfortunate byproduct of wt loss surgery. Nothing can really help with the hair loss. Take you vitamins, watch your lab work to see how well you body absorbs vitamins, stay hydrated, eat as much protein as possible, take calcium citrate. You should know "the drill" by now. Patience is needed in this process. It took me 24 months to attain my maximum wt loss. I see some post ops in my support groups who had RNY some 2 years ago and only have 75-80 pounds wt loss--they aren't doing something right. You should be happy with your wt loss, and realize that the current things you are complaining about are only temporary. Good luck in the coming months. Don't drive yourself crazy. Wt loss varies with each patient too. DAVE

Your loss so far is wonderful and quick. Try to be patient. Your body may just need to catch up. If the plateau continues talk to your nut or Dr. The hair grows back quickly they say. I know that's one part I'm not looking forward to, but the weight loss trumps the hair loss anyday.

You are losing very fast, that it's no wonder your body is taking a rest. Hair loss is normal at this point and will eventually stop in about 3 months...At this point you should up your protein intake to get things moving again...But you don't suddenly just stop losing weight after losing so much so fast...These plateaus will happen frequently til you are close to a normal BMI at which time your body will fight you for the last 15-20 lbs! Those are the hardest to lose and keep off...If you are not close to your BMI, and you didn't suddenly begin to eat what you did pre op...then you really have to give your body a break and let it catch up and adjust to all that loss! Up your protein and shake up your metabolism! Let your body know you are not starving!
