Question:
I am going to have lap band on May, and I have joined OA!

I am going to have lap band on May 9th, and I have joined OA, 90 day format group, to get help and support. I already, started loosing weight, and others encourage me to cancel the surgery. Has anybody have the same situation before? Thanks.    — Nirana (posted on April 24, 2007)

I lost before my lap band surgery too and then more when I started the diet three weeks before it. I have never had problems losing, my problem has always been keeping it off. That is where my band will be helping me. This time I am saying good by to my weight forever not just a few months or a year but forever. A lot of people do the one more time thing, I just had done too many one more times and went ahead with the surgery. This will be the last time for me. Good Luck what every your decision, Maureen

HI, I have not personally been in that situation, but I feel that if you really need the surgery and have been approved for it and have it scheduled, why cancel at this point? My PCP said most people who need to lose 75-100lbs may lose it dieting conventional ways, but only about 5% of them will actually keep the weight off. Most of us who have had this surgery have dieted and dieted and lost and gained over and over again, thats why we have gone ahead and done the surgery. It is no quick fix, but it is well worth it. No offense against OA, I am sure they are a good organization, but each situation is different, you have to evaluate yours.. and make that decision, good luck to you either way!! April

Hi, I am a child of adult alcoholic and drug parents. I have had the gastric bypass surgery and have lost 175 lbs. I have lost the weight and gained it so many times through programs like OA, Weight Watchers, etc. To me if your past is to lose weight and then gain weight then that is what has to be addressed. I have lost the weight and yet have found the eating habits are still there. I too must address the problems that I have with my food. But because of the weight loss I am dealing with it at a weight of 145lbs feeling and looking good instead of 3181bs feeling overwhelmed and depressed. I wish you all the love and prayers.

Hey, congrats on your loss and your upcoming surgery! I lost almost 30 pounds before I had my Band in. Cancelling the surgery never crossed my mind: 1) because 30 pounds was a drop in the bucket, and 2) I know I would either have stopped there, or more likely gained it all back plus. People react in fear. Don't let their fear infect you. Best of luck! :)

You are doing all the right things. I lost weight, too,in the months before my surgery, because I wanted to have a good surgical outcome. I joined Curves, which was great for my mindset, to focus on something that I COULD do. When colleagues saw my progress pre-surgery, a couple commented that I did not need it,just to keep doing what I was doing. I offered to sit down with them and share the torture of 40 years of dieting & wt gain...they didn't say those kinds of things to me anymore. Like so many of us,losing wt was pretty easy early on, but the disease is cunning, and eventualy I found that I could not spend 3 weeks on any diet without failure. I am 5 weeks out,and have so much to be grateful for. I am off blood pressure meds,my pain in my knees & feet are gone, and I can walk to work everday (2 miles) without being winded or exhausted. I hope that you are appreciating the wonderful effort that you have made already & that your surgery will go well. I want to hear all your miracles as you begin your exciting new life.

I lost about 90 pounds prior to my lap band surgery, and I got the same comments that you did. People that haven't been severely overweight do not know the difficulty in maintaining a weight loss. The band is a tool to help lose and keep it off. You still have to work at it. I love having the lap band, I don't feel hungry and continue to lose weight.

I'll bet the people in OA were the ones who told you to cancel the surgery. I had my lap band in July 05. It took me 14 months to reach goal. I am now a size 4 and have maintained it without any trouble. I told no one I had the surgery so I don't have to put up with uninformed and uninvited opinions. All I get is compliments. Come on over to the lap band forum on this sight.

Hi... whether you have the surgery or not is a PERSONAL decision made best by you ALONE. You have to decide what is best for you. I would venture to say that the majority of the people on this site didn't have a problem dieting and losing some weight, the problem was keeping it off. While I sure OA is a good place to get support for your eating disorder (we all have/had one) do not let someone else make the decision for you. If you find that you are not getting the support that you need there, seek other support options (OH, the hospital where the bypasses/laps are done will have a support group that meets once weekly. take care, congrats on the weight loss on your own and good luck despite whether you decide to have surgery or not. You will encounter people who will be jealous of your decision, you courage, your decisiveness and yes, even your success... so keep your head up and surround yourself with SUPPORTIVE people...

Hello, I too lost weight before my surgery because the doctor told me to lose as much as I can before surgery so that I will have less weight to lose and I would be heathier. So, did you have the surgery if so how are you doing? I'm 3 weeks post op
