Question:
Has anybody else developed a liking to sweet things

after they had surgery? I think this is crazy. I never was much of a sweet eater and since I have had my RNY in 2006, I crave sweets. I have maintained my goal weight of 135-140 lbs. I might just have a few Skittles or a small piece of candy or a bit of a candy bar. Does anybody know why this is happening. I don't think it is head hunger, but I actually know my mouth is wanting it. Perhaps you have a thought on this. Thank you in advance for your answers.    — Kristy (posted on April 3, 2009)

Yes I can relate I had my surgery in 2005 I have never craved soooo many sweets in my life I assumed it was because I was replacing my white carb cravings like bread and rice, bread doesn't do much for me now but chocolate does!!!!! I can't wait to read other's answers

YES! I was not big on sweets (pun intended) I was more a potatoes, rice and bread eater, over sweets....But since surgery, I crave sweets MUCH more than simple flour carbs...I have my own theory for this...don't laugh at me! LOL But, muscles need sugar...Muscles are not only those huge connective tissues associated with body builders, but also your brain and heart! Your brain needs sugar (specifically glycogen) for basic function as well as energy...Like so many I cut carbs to very very low amounts because I had no room for them early post op and even out after a year. My pouch remained very small. So I had to sacrifce even complex carbs to get in my protein. I was also doing very serious exercise and cardio and not getting anywhere with muscles...So I did some reasearch and learned you have to "FEED" you muscles carbs (as well as protein) before and after work outs. Muscles might be made of protein, but their energy is from sugars! I began eating fruits during my long work outs and FINALLY at year 2 I was able to gain some muscle and my body craves sugar when I am doing anything cardio...So I truly believe it tells me what it needs...I try to eat only fruits and complex carbs, but like you, every now and then I want some chocolate (I go for tootsie rolls or skittles as well! ) I know... naughty! I have to be REALLY careful with sugar because I dump so just a few does it for me! But I totally get that. I crave sugar often...I have to be VERY strong and fight it and pick good choices...I cannot have any sweets in my house...So I am careful to try keep that stuff out of my grocery cart! And stock up on a variety of fruit! I eat several different fruits all day long. It's a battle to stay away from sugar if I limit carbs! Anyway, that's my theory...I am muscluar and very active...I need carbs! I get sick, dizzy, lightheaded and migranes if I try to eat low carbs...I can't do it. I eat them but in complex form 80-90 % of the time...EVERYTIME I go on a sugar binge, I gain weight! SO watch yourself! Don't let sugar suck you in...go fruit!
