Question:
Has anyone had any children post op?

I don't have any children but desire to conceive one day as I have no biological children. How long do we wait post op to have children and has anyone gained all or some of there weight back after having children post op?    — My1Comp (posted on June 4, 2009)

I've been on this site for a year and a half and have seen many people who have successfully carried children after wls. Good luck. But, to be on the safe side check with your doctor, everyone is different. Lesleigh

i have to say this. i do not have children and there is NO WAY IN HELL that i would EVER let myself get pregnant. after 6 months if pre-operative waiting and dieting, followed by the stress of having the surgery, followed by all the busting my hump i will be doing over the next year or so (and the rest of my life), do you think i am going to gain all that weight back just for the sake of reproduction? i would rather just kill myself.

I have heard of many people having children after the surgery. My Dr said just wait 18 months before trying for the sake of your health and your childs. I am in the same boat as you, I would love to have children one day and WLS is just the first step to getting myself healthy enough to get preg and have a healthy child. Don't let anyone discourage you from your dreams of being a mom.

i would just like to first say that Jen D's answer was very RUDE!!! You should be very carefull what advice you give to people. It is ok to have children after surgery. I have several friends who have had gastric bypass and have had healthy children. I am only 5 months post op, but i do plan on having more children, and my doctor said after 1 year post-op, I am free to start trying. Good luck to you and all you do.

Jen D was Rude? How? She wasn't talking about anyone else but herself. BTW, I totally agree with her.

Jen is definitely entitled to her own opinion about what she would do with her body. I am not fortunate to concieve a child so I try to get pregnant in a heartbeat. Not everyone that has children has a post-partum wt problem. Now that you know what is best for your body you may have a better pregnancy than others that have never needed WLS. Follow your heart, be mindful of your needs and embrace the day you have your baby.

I did have a beautiful baby girl 2 years after my RNY surgery. She's now 3 years old and very healthy. My Dr. was very concern about our nutrition so I had to take my pre-natal vitamins faithfully. I lost all the weight I gained (35 lbs) and had my pre-pregnancy weight back.

I got pregnant 8 months after having surgery and i had no health issues. I started out 280 pounds and was down to 170 when I found out I was having a baby. I only gained 11 pounds during my pregnancy and lost it all in one week. You still eat the same during the pregnancy so you should be fine
