Question:
Can you gain weight from an endoscopy?

I had my endospocy this past Wednesday and all went well. The next day, I had put on 2 lbs which I had worked hard to get rid of. I figured it must be liquid weight from the IV during the endoscopy and decided to run/walk a 5k race yesterday morning. Went great. I ate a little more than I should have on turkey day but not to an extreme. Got on the scale again and I still have the extra 2 lbs. Wouldn't fluids have gone away after the race and exercise? Anyone had something similar happen?    — C P. (posted on November 28, 2008)

You are correct, it is quite possible that the gain is from fluids from the endoscopy. The fliuds have sodium in them usually. Also, even though you watdhed what you ate yesterday and even ate maybe a little more , the holiday foods almost always have more hidden sodium in them as well, and the hidden richness catches us offguard sometimes. You did everything right as far as increase your exercise, and WOW a 5K race Awesome!!!wish i had done that!!! hang on there, the water retention will go away and the 2 pounds will be gone. I have an endoscopy in 2 weeks, thanks for the heads up on the fliud, never thought a bout that, but it does make sense. I finally have my first appointment with my surgeon on the 8th of dec.-- can't wait!! my husband told me that he will take me on a cruise when i lose 100 pounds!! i think i will wait until i have lost more like 150# but i did not tell him that!!. Best of luck in your WL journey- glad all wnet well for you with your endoscopy.hugs and good wishes. Cora

I have had two endoscopys and never gained weight. Endos only take about 10 minutes, not enough fluid to affect anything. OUr bodies flex out the water stuff, up one day down the next, 2 pound fluxuation one way or the other is nothing to worry about , it will come back off when it is ready when you work the system. Lyn

You can gain weight from fluid retention, but you can also gain weight from added MUSCLE. You may be LOSING FAT and gaining MUSCLE from all of the exercise you have been doing. you would still be ahead of the game, but have a net GAIN in WEIGHT! Muscle weighs more per square inch than FAT, so as you lose INCHES, you would gain WEIGHT with muscle. Added MUSCLE will also help you BURN more FAT. If this is happening to you, then it is a GOOD THING. Be patient. Wait a week or two. You should see a difference in weight loss by then. I hoe this helps. Hugh
