Question:
Do fruits and starchy veges cause dumping?

I have heard alot about dumping simple sugars but no mention of the complex carbs. Corn, peas, beans, sweet potatoes, all fruits. And can you ever eat bread again without dumping? I am preop and just wondering will these be cut out forever?    — buggyboot (posted on March 28, 2009)

The foods you listed to me sound more like the "hard to digest" ones. After rny, I found out the hard way corn is a no no. It comes out the sme way it goes in! Beans and sweet potatoes and fruits are ok. Any bread that turns "gummy" is a no no. I've had real good luck with crisp crackers (so many flavors to choose from!!!) and tortillas. I don't miss bread. As time goes on your body will let you know if you can tolerate any of these but I certinly wouldn't rush it. Don't know if this will help, but I wish you all the luck!!

Some complex carbs when over eaten will cause me to dump...I sometimes do not measure my fruit or veggie servings and that can sometimes be my own undoing! LOL I cannot eat canned corn as well as fresh boiled corn on the cob. It will give me a belly ache as well as high sugar fruits such as citrus, any melons, grape, etc...But if I take ONE SERVING, I am fine...Often I don't bother measuring fruits and dumping can mean the difference of a large banana or a small one. I go for the smaller fruits for this reason as well as saving calories...Small is enough! I think small when it comes to food now...That was a hard thing to submit to! I was like the rest of America in thinking biggere is better...Bigger food is just extra fat and calories! It's important to keep my eyes as small as my pouch! That has helped me so much! ...I will say too though that I could not tolerate many raw fruits or veggies for over a year! Including lettuce! So you might have to do like I did and slowly introduce raw foods back into your diet over time and practice moderation all the time...BUT HECK NO! I do not avoid them at all! They are natures vitamins..including whole grains! Regular white flour gets stuck everytime! It swells in my bowels and causes gas and bloating and is just NOT a nice feeling at all...Whole grains do not do that!(Again moderation) Too much of anything good can still be bad! My registered dietician is who taught me what to eat post surgery. My entire RNY class learned that we would eat like regular small people. I was told I would never have to count carbs or fat, ever again, but to stay away from trans and high sat fat...and simple carbs and sugar in moderation...I was taught to read labels and look for high protein and fiber and low sugar...If food was natural and didn't come with labels (such as fruits and veggies) No worry! Just eat til satisfied and not full and we would be successful! That philosophy has worked and continues to work for me now for 5 years!
