Question:
Hernia repair & TT - who do I see first to get this covered under insurance?

I have a hernia. I was rather happy to learn that because I thought I might be able to get a tummy tuck at the same time and have them both covered. But who do I see first? Who does this? Do I see a general surgeon for the hernia and a PS for the TT or one for both? Who is the best bet for getting this covered under insurance? Can anyone help? Thanks so much! Lucky for me my WLS surgeon also does TT and of course hernia repair. My suggestion is to contact a general surgeon and see if he/she would do the TT at the same time. I don't know if a plastic surgeon would do the hernia repair or if insurance would pay for one to do it. I would insist that both be done at the same time.

My WLS did my hernia repair and had doctors that he works with for tummy tucks. I'm sure yours will have someone in mind that he can refer you to. My insurance would not cover a tummy tuck, but my surgeon did such sa beautiful job on the hernia repair, that I really was happy with the results...a smooth stomach! Good luck on your search. Kim

Hi Pamela, I also have an umbilical hernia. When I went to my GP about it, he suggested that I wait until I lose all my excess weight and see if it's possible to get the TT at the same time as fixing the hernia since the hernia might be a medical excuse for the TT. He gave me a referal to a surgeon. I am now one month out from lapband surgery and my WLS is also a Plastic surgeon who says they can be done at the same time. So for now I'm just waiting. I'd like to hear what you find out. Best wishes.

Hi Pam - I have a hyatel (sp) hernia and just had a lower body lift and my arms done. Because the hernia at the moment is not bothersome they did not repair it. So, that meant the insurance did not pay for the lower body lift (includes tummy tuck) I had surpassed my goal weight and maintained my weight for 3 mos before I had the surgery. I just had it done. I am 5 wks out from that. Best of luck
