Question:
STILL ON PLATEAU

Hi, Im Jennie. here I am again still frustration about this 8 weeks plateau I am 5 months and have only lost 54 lbs. bypass. I was wondering is it safe to get in all of your protein amount required just doing protein shake, I feel too depress to eat but know that I have to get in protein. I have also heard about a 5 day pouch test, meaning going back to the beginning. or is that too late to do at my stage. I am really looking for HELP in a big way. I am so disapointed in myself to the point that I am lashing out and this is not me. PLEASE HELP ANYBODY AND ANYONE. Thank you so much Jennie    — zydeko47 (posted on September 23, 2008)

8 weeks not to lose at 5 months is very unusual...you are probably not getting in enough protein. i don't think you need the 5 day pouch test but you need to just get in more protein. having 2 whey protein shakes a day made with skim milk, lots of yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, protein based soups (lentil, bean) will jump start the weight loss. it is important to combine this with exercise too. write down everything you eat. are you working with a nutritionist? if you are you need to discuss this with her. i lost every single week for at least a year until i reached my goal weight. i followed the program and exercised religiously. good luck!

I would suggest journaling all of your intake on a site like I use- Sparkpeople. Especially when I think I'm doing everything right and the scales don't budge. I will usually find something in the numbers that needs tweaking. Usually need more protein, a little less sodium, a little more water, etc. Sometimes just changing something up a little can get the scales moving too... a little more exercise, a few more or less calories... a different exercise routine to change it up and surprise your body. Hang in there. You might consider a call to your nutritionist as well. Good luck, Dawn

I've been told that you can go back to and do a 5 day "pouch test" anytime... even years after your surgery. I finally got off my plateau and am losing again. I'd try changing your routine. When your body gets used to something it becmes "immune" to it... switching something else might kick-start you losing again. It worked for me!

I plateaued at about 6 months and then increased my exercise to get moving again...I never had a protein shake in my entire two years post-op. I made myself eat my protein like my doctor told me even when I didn't feel like it. It sounds like you are not getting enough protein and or some of your vitamins. I got really down when my vitamin B12 dropped off, try asking your doc to check your vitamin levels, it could be something very simple...Good Luck...
