Question:
Do they cancel surgery because of a cold?

My husband has a cold and I'm having surgery in 3 days, I'm afraid that if I catch it, they will cancel my surgery. Nothing in my pre-op stuff said anything about avoiding sick people or anything, but I'm getting really nervous and anxious. I'm going to call the office tomorrow (today is Sunday after all) and hope for the best, but I wanted to see if anyone else had any info or experiance?    — fijifruits (posted on December 30, 2007)

Cindy's lucky - my surgeon's group will not do this extensive surgery on someone who is ill. I agree with you - calling your surgeon will give you the best answer.

my info said if you have any signs of illness to call dr right away. try to spray lots of lysol and wash hands alot. good luck.

I WAS TOLD THEY ONLY WAY THEY WOULD CANCEL IS IF YOU HAVE A FEVER, I HAD A COLD A WEEK BEFORE MY SURGERY AND MY DR GAVE ME ANTIBIOTICS AND I FELT MUCH BETTER BY THE TIME I HAD SURGERY. TRY NOT TO GET ANY FEVER. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SURGERY, GOD BLESS, DEBI

If you are not sick, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you are sick, it seems that this year it usually involves a lot of coughing. Coughing forcefully may be very uncomfortable after surgery. Check wth your doc. If you get symptomatic , at least think about it. God bless

well if your husband has the cold, try to keep as many germs as possible away. but remember stress can also make you sick. so be careful how you handle this one. calling your doc would be good, in the meantime keep you both juiced up, fluids, fluids, if you can escape without getting a fever i dont see why they would. i was so sick 3 days before surgery, i could hardly hold my head up, my husband and i were already in colo. springs. i got some tylenol cold. and let me tell you, it kicked my butt. hey it worked for me. i also beleive in alkaseltzer plus. good luck to you both.

As important as having this surgery is to you... having surgery with a respiratory illness is not a safe thing. If you do not have a cold, there should be know problem, but I would not mask any true symptoms if you really do. That would not be in your best interest in the long run. They do not do surgery on people who are ill (cold, respiratory infection, etc...) for a very good reason. Good Luck to you, keep the purell handy! Prays and Blessings, Leslie

I don't think that well interfeer with surgery at all, but do call the office in the morning.

My surgeon is in Cleveland and he will not do surgery if you have sinus or chest congestion and a or a fever. Wash your hands alot and stay away for him. Wipe the phones and door knobs off with a anti bacterial wipe. Spray Lysol in i the air to kill air born germs. I got a cold 2 week before my surgery and got over in time you are in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck and take care! Blessings Tina

I had a cold when it came time for my surgery. My surgeon didn't cancel, because they pump you so full of antibiotics during the surgery that it doesn't matter if you've got a little bug. As long as you don't have an intense fever, you should be fine. And if you contact your office, they'll be able to tell you if your surgeon has any stringent policies regarding that. But like I said, as far as I know, you should be good. Not to mention, that it takes more than 3 days for a cold to percolate in your system, so, again, you should be fine. Good luck!

i had a real bad cold last year and they still did the surgery on me. stuffy nose. terrible. then having the gtube in my nostril made my breathing worse

Three days prior to my surgery I started coming down with a cold. I called my doctors office and they told that as long as I did not have a fever or the chills I should be ok. I started to immediately take Zicam and some herbal pills for the immune system to try to knock it out prior to my surgery. My surgery was on the 12/21/07 without any problems.
