Anne, It's a lot easier if you don't let your mind take over, just think of the positive end result, remember what you will accomplish in the end.

I was so focused and concered about my surgery that I did not want to eat, so the liquids werenot the problem, the stress I put on my self was more of an issue. Just think, if you were at the hospital because you had a problem with you apendex and they told you it had to come out or rupture, you would not think twice about the surgery to remove it. Well WLS today is no more risky then this kind of surgery, only you have a longer time to think about it, but remember, this too will save your live and you will live longer. Best of success to you!

For me the two week pre-op liquid diet was the hardest part. I had physical withdrawls from food. Not to mention the emotional withdrawals. About day eight everything begin to get better and started feeling clear headed. I have not had a diet coke since Feb. nor sugar. I do not have those old cravings. I can not imagine having to go thru surgery and then give up the sugar, caffine, etc.... It is much better go thru the surgery so you can concentrate on healthy eating. Surger 3-11-08. Lost 47 Lbs. I actually lost 17-18 lbs in the two week post diet. Stay Focused...you can do it.....BJ Godby

1 week before surgery I had to watch what I was eating. The day before surgery I was on clear liquids. I was hungry, but I was excited that surgery was around the corner. You'll do good. It's for a good reason.

The furst few days were hard. After that it got a lot easier. I would go in the other room when my husband was eating and towards the end it didn't bother me at all. I thought it would be harder than that. I am 3 weeks post op and ate my first egg today. First solid food in 5 weeks. Try to keep your mind focused on the big prize. Arden

HI:) I'm just a month out from Lap RNY, and yes the liquids were hard. I wasn't perfect with them, but it is so worth doing! I had to do two weeks worth of protein shakes, then clear liquids th day before surgery. It's a good time to figure out what kind of protein shakes that you like, and I had to drink a bounch of them in a day, so I was never really stomach hungry, but I had some bad Head hungry times. You can make it! YOu were strong enough to make the big decision for surgery, you can handle anything for a few weeks, right? Just remember that the liquids are not forever, and you're trading in all that food for awesome health! Take care, and good luck!

i think the more motivated you are to do everything right the less hard it will be on you to not eat. i did liquids 2 days before my surgery and had to take a boat load of laxatives and i was in the bathroom so much i didn't have time to even think about food. just remember it is VERY<VERY<VERY important to do what the doctor says, because if you eat.....when they do your surgery and you have any food waste in your intestines it can cause you some MAJOR problems!! you don't want to risk it!!!! good luck and it's not that bad...just focus on having the surgery and healing and remember.....you have the rest of your life to eat..hope this helps...Holly

I am on day 7 of liquids. I have protein shakes in milk----I heat them up and have 'hot cocoa.' Our 2 week diet includes 16 oz. of pure juice so I use it to make popsickles and s/f jello. I quit caffeine, soda, and chocolate a few months ago which helped. I will have surgery on June 3rd with the UW-Madison doctors who are excellent! I feel great!

Anne, I found it very difficult to cut back on eating before surgery (5-22-08) now, I am not hungry on clear liquid phase at all. Anymore there is such a variety of products available. For you and anyone else who reads this here are some suggestions: SF popsicles tropical, constant comments decaffeinated orange spice, clear broths, minute maid lite lemonade, SF Jello, half strength juice (apple, cranberry, or grape) and sugar substitutes added to whatever you prefer makes for a sweet, guiltless treat. Also, if you feel the need to chew, try Extra SF gum (that is helping me). We are so used to eating something and so the gum satisfies that urge very well. Everyone has their own vitamin regimen according to personal health, but overall Flinstones chewable complete 2x a day is all my doctor wants me to take.

I have surgery 5-30-08 and my bariatric center has a 10 day pre-op liquid diet. I am on day 8 and it has been pretty hard only in the sense that I felt physically ill for the first five days. A friend also going through surgery said her surgeon told her if that happens, having a small piece of chicken or fish (high protein) would be ok. Other than that, it has been ok!

My doctor had me on the liquid diet 3 weeks prior to my RNY on 4-2-08. There is no real limit on how much water you can drink and I found out that if I drank a lot of water I was not hungary at all. Plus I kept in mind the end result which was to be free of the extreme weight that I carried around for years.

I kept my eyes on the prize and didn't concentrate on what I was not able to consume.
