Question:
Drinking water is making me sick--any suggestions?

We buy deer park water. I have been putting every kind of flavors into water to drink it and it is still making me sick. No problems with ice cubes.    — Toby2 (posted on August 14, 2008)

I struggle with taking my water quota every day too. I found out that I can tolerate herb tea much better. So I drink 3-4 cups of mint, ginger or other decaf herb teas. Since it's warm, it actually soothes my stomach and I enjoy it. Farah

Water intake may initally be an issued with many post ops. There is one woman in one of my support groups who cannot tolerate plain water, even at 2 years post op. She either puts some lemon (or lemon slice) into her water, or adds some type of fruit juice for flavoring (apple juice, cranberry, etc.). You might try instant defaf iced tea mix too. I often used Lipton decaf instant iced tea powder (unsweetened) for a beverage in the middle of the day when it's hot. You could also add Stevia for natural non sugar sweetening. You can also drink fruit juices for fluids--100% fruit juices, not the cocktails which often have added sugars. DAVE

Most of the time I drink Chamomile Tea. I find it goes down easier. And Chamomile is good for settling a stomach.

I find that I can only tolorate Diasini water, made by Coke. Also I have to drink it room tempature. You might find it is not the ice cubes but the tempature that bothers you. With me, I smell and taste chemicals in most of the waters. Never had a problem until after surgery. I am going to europe in a month and I am freeking out over the water issue. I have even written Coke for a source and hope the water is the same quality. Bill

Have you considered trying to use sugar free popsicles as a source of fluids? Does drinking water at different temperatures make a difference? Try drinking water cold, with ICE; at room temperature; and tepid (warm). See if one makes a difference over the other.

I drink only distilled water, it was a big change from bottled water as it is very flat. We found that all of the minerals in the bottled water I was drinking raised my blood pressure, so I changed some time ago on the advice of my doctor. I had no idea. Sometimes when I want a little flavor, I will dilute some diet cranberry juice with it. I also LOVE the new Power ade Zero drinks... they do have citric acid so I do dilute them some so I don't get heartburn.... but great tasting and zero carbs and sugar. However you do it, get in those fluids Nevalle. Dawn

The only water I can drink without issues is Propel. Regular water hurts going down. Doesn't make sense, does it.

The only Crystal Light flavor I can stand is the Wild Strawberry flavor. It comes in a pack of 10, you mix one pack in to a 16 ounce bottle of water. Sometimes I drink them room temp. other times cold. I also drink General Foods International Coffee. It comes in a small rectangular-shaped tin can in the coffee aisle, and is available in Sugar Free flavors like Suisse Mocha, French Vanilla, and Vanilla Cream. It is pre-sweetened and is creamy, like a Hot Latte. Maybe one of these drinks would help you get in your water. Also try sugar-free popsicles (not the ones that say no sugar added). Hot tea with Splenda to sweeten it is very soothing. Good luck and God Bless/

I had issues with water for a long time. I am 20 months out RNY. As with a previous post, propel worked, but it does have sugar. Even though it does not make me dump, I have stopped using it because I think it triggers me into craving carbs. I drink decaf coffee, iced or hot, chai tea, water with lemon and splenda goes down nicely as well. I think you just have to keep trying till you find what works for you.
