You didn't specify which surgery you had...Regardless though, I can only give you my thoughts and opinions for RNY. You can't stop the hair loss. It's inevitable and it happens to all of us to some degree whether it's very minimal or extreme. Your body is being malnourished right now and the hair loss is an effect of that. It usually stops within 6 months but that's not written in stone. While you may not be able to stop it completely, some people swear that using biotin and upping your protein can keep it from getting worse. Others say zinc, coEnzyme Q10, primrose oil and even fish oil (omega fatty acids) will help as well. It all depends on who you talk to but remember that what worked for one will not necessarily work for all.

Fortunately I had very thick thick hair and lost tons of it to where i had thinning spots visable in the front. I went to a local natural food store and brought a product for hair skin and nails. It took about a month for them to really kick in but now I have tons of remarkable new growth. The bottle states to take them 3 times a day but I only do twice. I'm pretty sure my Dr. told me that you would lose the hair up til about the 6th month post op and that seems to have been the case with me. Good luck. And enjoy your new life!!!

Hair and nails are made from protein - if you don't get enough protein in your diet, your nails will become thin and brittle or will slow in growth and you will start losing your hair. Be sure you are getting at least 60 g of protein - at a minimum! I have heard about Biotin shampoo, but most have said it really didn't help much. As someone else said, however, everyone is different! Sometimes just the stress of the surgery can affect your hair loss.

One of the reasons we lose hair is due to a zinc deficiancy. Once I started taking Hair Skin and Nails my hair stopped falling out and started to grow back in. Give it a try.

The majority of us it seems have hair loss at about month 3-6...You started a bit early so hopefully it will end sooner too! Because there is so many combinations of reasons for hair loss after WLS, there is no one specific cure or remedy. We can all tell you that it does stop and it does grow back in about 3 months after it starts. It's scary, but I hope that it helps to know that so many of us have gone thru it and our hair came back!! Actually, my hair is shiny and happier than it ever was with all the vits and protein I get now!

The most obvious reason that your hair is falling out is that you aren't taking in enough protein. What is out there on the market can be found in the grocery store or supplement store and is called meat, soy products, whey protein and a number of other nutritional items. You don't have to suffer at all. You need to watch your protein intake. It probably would be a good idea to talk to your nut.

Eat protein, take all your vitamins as directed and you may need some lab work done at your doctor's office like a thyroid panel, iron, and ferritin level. If ok with your MD, Biotin (vit B7) is suppose to help and you can't overdose since the excess is excreted in your urine. There are products on a Nioxin web site that make your hair appear thick but does not prevent hair loss or make hair grow.
