i hear you Dee........it defies all logic. i had a cystectomy (volleyball size) on Thursday and was discharged from the hospital the next (Friday) morning. i weighed in when i got home and had lost 1 pound. today, I somehow managed to gain 5pounds in the 24 hours between returning home from surgery and weighing in this morning......even tho ALL ive done for the last 24 hours is take stool softeners with sips of water and pee a couple of gallons every half hour. so much for calories in calories out lol.

well I don't know if this is going to help you but I will try to explain to the best of my knowledge. Muscle is much more dense than fat. So if you took a pound of muscle and a pound of fat the fat takes up more space. So if you exercise and gain a pound of muscle and lose a pound of fat, you still weigh the same but you now have less fat and more muscle. So you weigh the same but you are smaller. Here is an explanation i found on the internet,Muscle weighs the same as fat, a pound of rocks weighs the same as a pound of feathers. The key is muscle is more dense, approximately 25 - 33% more dense than fat. This is why it is not uncommon to shape your body and lose a pant, shirt, and dress size and not lose hardly any body weight.

I know this one well - I worked out at the gym over 4 years- I never lost weight but my waist was much smaller as were my hips and abdomen and I had thcker more muscular arms & legs and I went from a pear shape to an hour glass shape. I was very pleased with the results even tho I was the same weight. They showed us what 5 pounds of fat looked like vs muscle and the muscle was much smaller. That really made an impression. I was also down to a smaller size. I lost inches but not weight. Frankly I was suprised.

Hi! when I was early out surgery I belonged to curves and was weighed and measured monthly. Some months I only lost 10 pounds, but I lost 20 inches form all over. I do know it takes a long time to build muscle, so this wasn't my case...but I think where we lose the fat from makes a differnce. Also there is water weight. Other than this..I have no idea..lol Hugs and good luck! Kim

All the posters have great answers. I just have another point to add. Lean muscle mass burns more fat off of your body even between workouts. So as we do toning and strengthening of our muscles that are denser they continue to help burn off the fat because the muscles need nutriens and calories burned to maintain and be healthy. Especially building large muscle mass like in your legs and glutes (butt) really helps burn off the fat. I know I'm at a standstill as far as the pounds go but I seem to continue to loose inches. I just got down into a size 18 that's down from a size 26 since March. I am just amazed because I weighed a lot less than this the last time I was in a size 18. I hope you have continued success and keep losing bothe pounds and inches.
