The reason many people have for weight loss surgery is to save or extend their lives. If this were true, it would defeat the purpose of having the surgery. This is the first time I have ever heard about something like this. Most people do well, or at least better, after surgery than before. Mortality rates are quite low for most obesity related surgery, with the VSG bing the lowest at much less than one percent; Much, MUCH less than one percent. Most of the deaths that DO occur due to surgery are due to the actual surgery, and occur on the operating table. Most people live much fuller lives AFTER obesity surgery than they did before. Most people live a FULL life, meaning that they die of old age, and not 13.6 years after their surgery. I hope this helps.

I have never heard that about the 13.6 years. I know plenty of people that had it done when they first started doing it! If this were the case, I'm sure they wouldn't give the surgery to people as young as 18, that's just silly! And why would anyone WANT it if the 13.6 was correct, I sure wouldn't!

Personally, I don't think that the numbers are the most important part of your question. For me the most important part is "LIVING"! Before I had surgery, I was trapped in the house, at 457 lbs, I could barely walk, for 3 yrs I rarely left the house, (I had to use a wheel chair outside the house), I got winded walking across the room, was depressed and thought about suicide everyday! Now I have a life again, and I thank God for the chance to live outside my self imposed prison. Was it worth it if the surgery only gives me a few extra years? YES! YES! YES! I would do it over again in a heartbeat! I'm down 173# and still have a ways to go, but I'm living my life and not rusting out.

perhaps the 13% is the mortality rate of the clinic you use. My clinic's MR is 2.7% or some small number like that. Just a thought as I have never heard this before and don't beleive it.

I read a review of people that had surgery vs people that stayed obesse instead and over a 13 year period the mortality rate of the people that choose to stay obese was more than double that of those that had surgery. Maybe you need to look up more info and determine the source of the info and the accuracy.
