Question:
Fell Off Wagon
I have my Lap/RNY 9 days ago and today I had 1/3 of a protein bar. I made sure that I chewed it until it was liquidfied. Has this happened to you? It's that time of the month & I was craving SUGAR badly. My stomach is making weird sounds. Will I be ok? Please be real, no preaching, just tell me if you've cheated like me. I just want to know if I'm normal here. Thank you all! — Ruth M. (posted on February 25, 2009)

No preaching here, Of course you are normal, have I cheated I may have
eaten something I was not suppose to but not until months after surgery,RNY
7-08 lost 130 pounds, I then got back right on track, Your stomach wil make
weird sounds mine still does at 7 months, Hopefully the protein bar u ate
had little to no sugar pure protein at walmart or safeway, has 20 protein
and o sugar. But u need to heal first, if u fight the cravings at the very
beginning it gets easier later, My question to u is why? that is what I
ask my self after eating something that wasn't right. Why would u want to
eat this so close to surgery? what is going on in your life? Did u deal
with any eating disorders prior to surgery or was this just one of those
things, at 9 days out I could not even eat, a very small bite I was on soft
foods at this time. You will be fine but u r still healing and should only
be eating what your doc said, keep in mind u have gotten this far u do not
want to get into old habits, get back on track I wish u the best Tammi

no preaching, i'm thinking, i was on full liquids 3 weeks, pureed 3 weeks,
then soft foods 3 weeks. Not allowed protein bars till well into the 6th
month. My question is if you couldnt hold out 10 days, what happens next
month. I would call this an abbertition, the devil made you do it, and
carry on following all your protocol. I am one of those who are afraid to
cheat, will be 5 yrs out next month, and even though i can eye half a cup
of food each meal, i still measure, crazy I know but hey, took off 230 lbs
and keeping them off. I keep power crunch bars here, but only eat one when
I will be gone all day and know i have to eat. Good luck. Cindi m.d.

You will be fine. Just be careful. Bad habits are hard to break. Be strong.

I am going to preach to you! Doodles said it - no solid foods for at least
a month post surgery!! I know of someone who ate a full Chinese meal 4 days
post op and she ruptured something along the incision area, went into a
coma and died. That's the part I'm lecturing you about. In the future you
probably will cheat a little (I did) but please wait until you heal.

I have the most awful strong cravings at my TOM (Time of Month) as well...
And it amazes me how much I can eat and WANT to eat. I usually lose the
battle with TOM. I try to have a good variety of healthy things to eat so
I don't eat everything in sight. After a while of wondring if something was
wrong with me, I learned this is just one of those things I have to deal
with every month and so I just prepare by having good stuff to snack on.
Not all of us start on liquid diets (against most who believe their docs
plan is THE ONLY plan...or the RIGHT plan)...But if that's the plan you are
on, then that's the closest plan to stick to...You would have done yourself
better to go for a SF chocolate pudding or a little mashed banana for
something sweet. Protein bars can still make my pouch a bit uneasy on most
days...and there for a while I was addicted to them and they were a HUGE
trigger food for me...I have to stay away from them...To me they are
nothing but WLS candy that's just a bit higher protein than a Snickers
Bar...It's hard to find any that are worth the mental problems they caused
me. LOL Once in a while I will take one to a job site as a meal
replacement...when i know I cannot leave or break for a food run.
Otherwise, they are a bad excuse for me to eat chocolate! I'd rather just
get a small dark chocolate bar and break it up and freeze it for those
chocolate attacks! (Frozen takes you time to eat it and by the time you are
done with a tiny piece, it's enough without any real damage in calories or
sugar or carbs) Dark chocolate actually has more nutrition and health
benefits than most even had a clue! It has some SERIOUSLY high antioxidant
levels! I enjoy a small piece of dark chocolate now and then when TOM comes
knocking..
