Question:
Got a favorite craving you like to share??

I used to LOVE eating bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwiches. For the last month I have been craving this big time!! Instead of eating a BLT sandwich, I cook up 2 strips of sizzlelean or real bacon and cut up a couple of tomato slices topped with NU salt loaded with potassium and one tablespoon of light ranch dressing to ever so lightly dip the tomato and sizzlelean into it. Its truly heaven to me!! How long do cravings last and what kind of cravings is everybody else having??? Iam 5 months out and down 80 lbs. RNY distal    — Laura G. (posted on May 9, 2002)

I too have been having cravings-except I was craving Mexican food-which I HATED pre-op! Now I love it...I eat re-fried beans with salsa on them once a week!!! Lately I have been craving chinese food, so I gave in and got steamed chicken and seafood w/ steamed veges. I got some spicy sauce on the side to dip into-it was YUMMY! I am almost 7 mos out RNY distal -138 lbs.

I do not know how long the cravings last, but my peticular one right now is a 1 egg omelette made with pam and stuffed with about 2-3 oz of refried beans and lowfat sargento grated cheese! I am 4 1/2 mos. out and down 74 pds. The funny thing is- I HATED eggs before my bypass surgery!

Every night since surgery, I have been dreaming about ordering pizza, which is really strange since I was so sick of it pre-op. I have also been craving fast food and fried chicken strips, but I think it's mainly because I'm not aloud to have them. You always want what you can't have!

I am 5 months post-op - Open RNY and have lost 100 pounds. Shortly after surgery I craved Hot & Sour soup. I must have eaten it 6 or 7 times before I got past that (that was 2 weeks post-op). I also craved grilled salmon in the early weeks. I still enjoy both of those foods, but the cravings are gone. My biggest craving now is cottage cheese with diced cucumber, red, green and yellow bell peppers, onion and tomatos. I eat this at least 5 times a week and have for three months. I am so thrilled that I am craving healthy foods that are high in protein instead of junk food.

I get "cravings" all the time. They last a few weeks or so and then I am done. I went on a "salad kick" for about a month...I was on a refried bean and cheddar kick for about three weeks. I have talked to a friend of mine who is about 14 months out and she does the same thing. She just got off of a 'watermelon kick". She was eating watermelon every day of the week for about 5-6 weeks. Now, she is tired of it and is moving on. My grandmother used to say that cravings are your body's way of letting you know what it "needs".

Watermelon! I crave the stuff--probably cuz I can't seem to get enough water in. I have passing cravings that I satisfy and move on from also, like chips and dip (I made a seven layer mexican dip w/lots of beans, cheese, and ground beef. Ate it, loved it, and moved on.) I craved cookies, so I found some shortbread cookies with not much sugar in them--they are almost gone and I won't need to buy them again for a while. I crave steak periodically and also strawberries. My latest odd craving is baked beans. The only craving that seems to stick is watermelon (and other fruit in general). Hurry up, summer!

Fun topic! My first craving postop was Macaroni and Cheese! I was desperate for some! Then, I started craving chili but I could have that so I fixed it. I have had a lot of other cravings...about two months ago my biggest craving was bologna sandwiches with mayo and cheese. I bought bread, bologna, cheese, and mayo and ate bologna sandwiches for lunch and dinner for 3 days! I was craving it that bad! Then that passed and I never think of that anymore hardly ever at least....here lately my big craving has been corn on the cob. Don't ask me...but I love it with some salt and pepper and some butter. DEEEEELISH!

6 MONTHS POST-OP TODAY. Down 82 pounds...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ME! I also go through cravings for 3 week periods and then I have no desire to eat the food again! I loved Won-Ton soup and ate it every night for 4 weeks straight! Now, I don't even want to look at it. My current love is Tostitoes White Corn bite size chips with sour cream and onion dip. Mmmmmmmmmmmm! I also LOVE garlic and breakfast sausage patties, & I used to hate sausage! Go figure!

6 MONTHS OUT TODAY TOO!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ME TOO!! Yippeeee! Yes, at about month 2 I wanted anything and everything that had tomatoes in it, or just tomatoes straight up. My fav were the grape tomatoes! Yum. Salsa, cocktail sauce, tomato soup, chili with CHUNKS of tomatoes, and tomato sauces. I was a tomato freak. And I still enjoy them but don't crave like I used to. Now I am onto FRUIT. Almost any kind will do. As long as it is juicy and fresh. Preferably refrigerated. I have just discovered honeydew, Juuuuicy! This fruit and veggie thing is a whole new world to me, I was never much of a healthy eater before, but now I love it!! Bon Apetite'

I will be 2 years out in November. After getting over rejecting the thought of food my first craving was tangerines. Then I went on to eggdrop soup...that lasted for what seemed like forever. Followed by peaches and on to lobster and catfish. Now it is rare lamb and green tea, some combinations huh???

My cravings vary. For awhile it was salsa... salsa on everything, salsa on chicken, salsa on vegies, salsa salsa salsa. I had a spinach phase... spinach four times a day. I would scramble my breakfast egg and roll it around spinach. I had spinach salad for lunch with meat and cheese. At supper whatever we were having I dumped some spinach in mine. I even had it for snacks. This lasted about a week. If my craving seems benign... something not bad for me like chocolate chips, I give into it and try to work it into a way to get both my craving and my daily nutrional needs. Good luck!

Cravings, yes! Let's see right after surgery it was vegetables. Couldn't get enough. Then it was pasta in any way shape or form. This week it's been french fries. I finally gave in and had some. They made feel yucky because of all the grease. If I hadn't ate a lot of them I would've been fine. I went out with the family and skipped the burger and just had fries...but it didn't feel good. Bummer.
