Question:
Can sugar in fruit juices make you Dump?

I know sugar can cause dumping but what about natural sugar from fruit and fruit juices. I noticed with my post op diet I must drink total liquids which did say fruit juice.    — Kelly* P. (posted on November 3, 2002)

Yes, sugar from fruit juices can make you dump. It depends on how much sugar is in the serving. For the small amounts you'll be able to drink as a new post-op, it's not likely to be an issue. Sometimes it's not an issue at all (depends on the person).

Check your sugar content, I used to love orange and apple juice but now i can't tolerate the sugar or acid.

They sell orange juice that has reduced acid - and I found that during the early stages if I diluted it down the sugar didn't bother me. Now it still doesn't but I don't drink more than 4 ounces a day TOPS!

I have never had a problem with any kind of fruit or fruit juice. Some people are more sensitive than others. You will only know by trying them out for yourself.

It is strange I can drink coffee with sugar in it and it won't bother me, but orange juice causes dumping.

I had alittle taste of cantilope last night and I felt soooo sick to my stomach. Fortunately, I did not throw up but I will not do that again for quite awhile.

I have serious dumping on fruit-even a tiny little sliver of fruit. I dump really easy though.

i have a sensitive "dumper" ;) so i dump on all fruit juice and some whole fruit. try SF Tang, Diet V8 Splash or Crystal Light with added calcium. i crave fruit juice and these are good alternatives. if i have no choices, i mix unsweetened juice with half water, and if i go slowly it isn't too bad.

I actually dumped on the way home from the hospital on 100% juice, no sugar added pineapple juice! It came that morning on my tray, and my surgeon's PA said it should be ok. However, after 5-6 sips it wasn't! I am now almost 5 months post op and haven't had the nerve to try anything pineapple related. I have had small amounts of OJ, and can eat some fruit without problem. good luck!

I will dump on the juice (100%) but not on the actual fruit. So, I just eat the fruit.

I have no problem dumping from fruit juice as long as it's 100% pure juice and I limit myself to about 4 ounces. I stupidly drank about 16 ounces of ice cold orange juice during the summer and wanted to die. I will NEVER make that mistake again. Open RNY 11/29/01 -156 pounds

The nutritionist at the WISH Center told me to dilute fruit juice 50:50 to prevent dumping, and that apple and white grape juices were the best ones to avoid dumping. Pineapple juice has one of the highest concentrations of natural sugar. I eat applesauce (read the labels carefully - no sugar added, just apples & water) and have had no dumping problems with these.
