Question:
Will I ever get off this plateau???

Help Amos Friends, I will be 5 weeks post op on Thursday. I lost 14 lbs my first week out and since then I have put 4 lbs back on. I am doing everything my doctor has told me to do. He are my stats: preop 5'2" 214lbs. I am currently doing 6 meals a day. 2 of those are Protien drinks. The others are soft foods, tuna, shrimp, soup, applesauce, cottage cheese, cheese, peanutbutter, grits etc...I am drinking 48-75oz of water a day (depending on the day) and I am walking 2 to 2 1/2 miles a day. I have not lost any weight in 4 weeks and have put 3 lbs back on. I would appreciate any support or advice on this situation. I am just thinking how could I be the only person this surgery doesn't work for. HELP ME PLEASE!!! Thanks for all the continued support.    — Tami C. (posted on November 23, 2002)

I am almost 5 wks out, 10/22, and you are eating alot more than I am. I have 1/2 C cottage cheese for breakfast, for lunch I have 2-3 oz tuna with very little mayo or 1-2 oz cheese on crackers. For dinner I have 4 oz chicken or fish and that is about it. No protein drinks and no calorie beverages. I drink unsweet tea or water. I have lost 28lbs and the only time I feel hungry is around 10 at night. I ignore that becaure it is mostly head hunger. Good luck to you.

You should call your doctor. He/She is the only person who can tell you what is going on. Good luck....

It sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep in mind that you are a lightweight and will lose weight slower. At about the 3 weeks post-op time frame, many post-ops hit the first of many plateaus. They can last several weeks-mine lasted 2 weeks. Just keep up what your doing and I think the weight will start to move. If not, then do see your doctor. Were you transected? If you don't know, ask your doctor about this too.

I too hit a plateau about 5 weeks out... lasted approx 2 weeks and still the weight loss is slow. I would suggest if you are not doing so already... write down every bite that goes into your mouth...the website FitDay.com is a wonderful FREE site where you can track your food intake and your activity (and much more)... it will show you exactly what amt of calories and protein etc etc that you are consuming...It does sound like you could be taking in too many calories...I am 2 months and 1 week out and I take in approx 800 calories, I make sure I get 60 + grams of protein in and try to stay as low fat and carb as I can. Don't give up though...everything is going to work out...maybe just slower than you prefer! God Bless! Susan

First, I would like to say that I am NOT the carb police and that I truly DO believe that carbs are a necessary part of our diet. BUT I also feel that if you aren't loosing (and in fact are gaining) that maybe you should drastically cut out the carbs from your diet. My suggestions (for what they are worth): Eliminate - grits or any kind of cereal or grain, processed cheeses (like velveeta or the kind in plastic sleeves) and stick to hard cheeses or mozarella cheese. Eliminate potatoes, carrots, corn and any white or yellow vegetable (except cauliflower). Cut out(or drastically limit) all soups, fruits, fruit purees and juices. Consume leanish proteins (shrimp, fish, and any other meats you can tolerate, no-sugar added peanut butter, cottage cheese, eggs, etc.), cooked green veggies (and cauliflower), protein shakes (if you had trouble getting your proteins thru foods), sugar-free jello and pudding, and raw green veggies as you can tolerate them. Ok - now I only put all this because you said HELP ME...so I'm trying. Good luck and feel free to email me if you want.

Hi Hon: I have to tell you, I hit the dreaded plateau at 200 pounds. It seems like I would never move from that number. There is something so inspirating about being in the 100's, that I was so upset staying at 200 day after day. This did eventually pass, I have lost 16 pounds since. I have heard others say that a weight that you have plateaued at before, you will plateau at again after WLS. Could that be possible with you. Don't worry, you will lose. Being at such a low beginning weight, I am sure you will get to your personal goal, too. Believe me, I know it is hard, but you will not fail. We are all afraid of that for sure. Love Grace

I think Ruth hit the nail on the head. You need to be careful about WHAT you're eating. Try to stick to just the proteins for a week or so and it may jump-start your weight loss again. I'm in your category - a lightweight - and my pounds are also coming off more slowly than others, but I have confidence I will reach my goal; it just won't happen in a couple of months. Good luck.
