Kathy, don't be too sure that candy won't make you sick. If you ate one piece it might mean you have a certain degree of tolerance for it but I bet if you at a couple more pieces you'd find yourself feeling pretty bad. Don't beat yourself up for it but try really hard not to use this mistake as a permission slip to find other ways to eat around the surgery. When I used to diet prior to WLS I'd do really good then I'd make one little slip up. Once I made a little slip up I'd just quit. I had an "all or nothing" mentality. Well, part of our recovery following WLS is finding balance in all areas of our lives. We're looking to become normal. So, you found out you can have a piece of candy without getting sick. That doesn't mean you can have 10 pieces. Keep working the program and your efforts will pay off in spite of this little setback. Happy Holidays!

Everyone has a different tolerance for sugar, and 30 percent of RNY'ers don't dump at all. You may or may not be a dumper, and won't know until you cross that line. The small amount of sugar you consumed obviously wasn't enough to make you dump but if you had had another piece or two, perhaps that would have done the trick. My doctor also told me that liquid sugars (milkshakes, for example) will make you dump much quicker than solid food sugars. In my case, he was right!

I also have no dumping problems. Fact is, I am 3 months out and can eat anything. I can drink alcohol and I don't get drunk fster than I did before. I am not discouraged though. I know there is no way I can consume anywhere near what I did before. It always seemed like I had a bottomless pit. Just make sure you don't overdue anything. Try to stay on your liquid diet as long as they have you on it. If you cheat on occasion, don't beat yourself up about it.
