Question:
Seeking others who have had silastic ring gastroplasty

I am considering the above surgery soon and would love to hear from anyone who has had this surgery. I want to know what made you decide to have this particular WLS type surgery as opposed to the RNY, and how you are doing now.    — jackie K. (posted on July 24, 2003)

I had a gastroplasty with the silastic ring in 1983 and it was a dismal failure. Maybe that particular surgery has changed and improved over the years but for me it just didn't work. My mother had the identical surgery a month later at a different hospital with a different surgeon and hers didn't work either. I only lost 35 pounds and she lost about 50. It's a very personal decision and I'd never say whether or not you should have it. I just think you should have all the information available. Good luck.

Hi there...I had the SRVG (as we call it here in Indy) surgery 3/18/03. I am 4.5 months post-op and have lost 72 pounds so far. I am still losing too!! I chose this surgery because of all the risks with the other surgery. I just felt this was safer but that is my opinion.
