Question:
Is it normal to be depressed after surgery?

I am almost 3 months post-op and I am still depressed. I am on medication for it, but it's as if it is not working anymore. And and all suggestions are apprecited.    — Antoinette P. (posted on January 22, 2001)

Yes, depression after surgery is normal and can last for a period of a month or more so I have been told. I did go through what is called the hybernation syndrome. Depression for about a week or so. Then one morning I woke up and I felt better. I think if you have previous issues with depression you may want to consult your doctor. I am not sure if you are having what commonly comes with the surgery or if yours is different and needs special attention. I pray that you feel better soon....

It is very normal to get some depression after surgery, I should know because I have spent the last 3 1/2 months myself fighting with it. I am also on medication and mine is working, thank goodness. Don't sit back if what you are taking isn't doing what it is suppose to do. Talk to your doctor and let him know your depression is not better so he can adjust it so it does what it is supposed to do. I am just starting to feel better and am actually enjoying the weight loss, finally! I went through a stage where I was sure if something could go wrong with my surgery it was going to and it drove me to tears all the time. This is such an adventure it isn't worth being sad and not enjoying the strength it has taken for us to get this far. I am 4 month post-op yesterday and was down 65 pounds as of last Tuesday and I am so proud of myself. You have to remember that we have lost our best friend, food. Also, being heavy protected us and comforted us and as we lose we have to face those fears head on and can't hide behind our old friend any more. I felt weak and whiny when I was depressed and was mad that I couldn't eat a cookie and chocolate. Well, we are both stronger then that. Get your medication adusted and hang in there. What you are feeling is normal in alot of us who have struggled with weight most of our lives. It will get better as you learn you are in control and can handle problems without the help of our "friend" Good luck and hang in there. Cindy
