Question:
Do most surgeons set you up with a dietician post-op?
Since I have been overweight my whole life this would be very important to me. I just don't know how to eat proportionaly — Jessica H. (posted on April 22, 2002)

My doctor makes you follow a stage 4 diet for 6 weeks set up by a dietician
before he will do the surgery. I met with the dietician 2 times before and
at my followup appt..

The Bariatric Treatment Centers have their own dieticians on staff. I have
a checkup with my dietician every time I have a checkup with my surgeon.
Mine has been full of suggestions and a big help. I would definately
recommend finding one if your doc doesn't set you up with one.

While I was in the hospital, the dietician came to see me and talk about my
diet for the first 6 weeks. She then gave me a phone number and told me
set up an appointment with the outpatient dietician once I was released
from the hospital (there's about a 6 week wait to get into them so it
coincided with my first 6 weeks on the liquid/soft food). That visit was
VERY helpful to me since you eat completely differently then you ever have
before (e.g., concentrating on protein, low carbs, etc.).
If your doctor doesn't recommend seeing a dietician, I would make an
appointment at the hospital where you have your surgery to speak with one.
They have to be used to seeing gastric bypass patients so they make sure
there telling you how to eat correctly with the new stomach.
