Question:
How to order Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast

This is more of an answer than a question. A while back there was a question about how to order sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast in bulk - it's hard to find in the supermarkets. Well, I found the order form my nutritionist gave me. Here's the details: 1 case no sugar added rich milk chocolate (64 packets) is 30.09 1 case no sugar added vanilla creme (64 packets) is 30.0+ These include shipping and handling. Make check or money order payable to: Carnation Instant Breakfast P.O. Box 2407 Young America, MN 55553-2407 All products will be sold in case quantities only. All products will be shipped via UPS to a street address only - no P.O. Boxes. Be sure to include your telephone number in case they need to contact you. If you have any questions about your order, call 1-800-538-8327. Products sold only in the continental United States. Please allow 4 weeks for shipment. Hmm, reading this I see there is no SF strawberry. This confirms my suspicions that the strawberry and vanilla CIB I was given in the hospital was actually NOT sugarfree!    — sandsonik (posted on October 26, 2002)

Thanks for the information. One should be aware that there are far more carbs inthis kind of shake -- and less protein -- than there is in most protein shakes.

I have the box in front of me as I'm writing this. There are only 12g of carbs (of which 7g are natural sugar occuring from lactose) per packet/serving for the milk chocolate sugar free type. I bought mine at Walmart. They've carried it here since their super store opened. I paid somewhere around $3.00 for the box. I stocked up on them since I'm having my surgery next week. My husband husband has used them for a long time and loves them.

Marti, I'm aware that CIB is not the most high protein choice out there - however it is the regimen that many doctors prescribe for their patients for their first two weeks, and many patients want to follow their doctor's advice to the letter right out of the gate. Considering that's ALL the carbs they will be getting, I don't think it's too high a number, but the protein number could certainly be more impressive. On the other hand, it is packed with vitamins...

My doctor has us ad a tablespoon of non-fat dry milk, which ads more protein. Also, you can also order it online at instant breakfast.com. and you don't have to order a whole case, you can order it by the box. I know that seems odd when you consider how much we have to drink, but in my case, I love the chocolate, but once in a while I want vanilla so I buy 3 or 4 boxes at a time. I hope this helps.

Oh if you enjoy strawberry - there is many brands of sugar-free strawberry syrup you can add to it. Delish!

I would reconsider buying in bulk if you are still pre-op. I bought a couple of boxes pre-op only to dump on them post-op, the "no sugar added" variety. I never drank another one. And I did fine without them.

Keep in mind that when you add milk to the CIB it takes the sugars up another 12g (In addition to the 7g in the no sugar added mix). I have never had a problem with it but some people do. I prefer it to protein drinks as far as taste and cost, and with the milk it has 12g protein per shake. But it does have more carbs/sugar than most as well. The no sugar added *DOES* come in vanilla and strawberry, but I have yet to find it in stores. I did find the vanilla at netgrocer.com but have never ordered from there.

The strawberry is only available as 'demos' to hospitals (etc.). It is not available in stores or online. (My dietician asked the rep from CIB.)

I did a little checking myself on the sugar content and here is what I found: On the carnationinstantbreakfast.com website, it lists nutritional content of each of their products and NONE of their products are sugar FREE. The Chocolate NO SUGAR ADDED has 7 g of sugar. The strawberry powder has only 18 g of sugar. The strawberry ready-to-drink has a whopping 33 g of sugar so avoid the ready to drink at all costs. For what it's worth, I think if the strawberry is what you want and you don't dump on the 7 g chocolate, I don't think another 11 g is going to do you in. Just my humble opinion.......adding in my 2c
