Question:
QUESTION FOR POST-OP'S !!

I WAS WONDERING IS THE CHANCE FOR YOU TO DEVELOPE PROBLEMS AFTER WLS PRETTY COMMON? I MEAN WHERE YOU HAVE TO GO BACK AND HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TAKEN CARE OF THAT WASN'T A PROBLEM BEFORE WLS. I'VE BEEN READING ALOT OF POFILES AND THIS SEEMS TO COME UP ALOT. IS THERE ANYONE WHO HAS NOT HAD ANY MORE PROBLEMS AFTER WLS? OR DOES THIS SURGERY SEEM TO MAKE THINGS GO BAD THAT WASN'T BAD BEFORE?    — latrishanickle (posted on February 23, 2003)

Latrisha, this is a good question. Many people have had complications on here after WLS, myself included. ANd it is ofcourse something to consider, but I also believe that you are more likely to hear from and about people who've had something go wrong than people who had everything go right, you know what I mean? I had a hole in my stomach / marginal ulcer. The risk of this is less than 1%. There are smaller complications, and larger, but they are not very common. But for most people, even with complications, the benefits outweigh the risks, and I don't regret this surgery at all, despite all the pain I've gone through. I feel healthier and am thin now! :) Goodluck in your journey!

Latrisha - I think you will find that most (I am talking 90-95%) of RNY post-ops have no complications whatsoever. I know that I haven't had any problems. And many of the complications that are out there are minor in nature. I think that you will find that bad news is more popular than good news (why are the newspapers and TV always full of bad news and why do they call good news pieces "fluff")...JR (open RNY 07/17 -152 pounds)

I'm nearly 5 months out with no complications. I know that there's a chance that I may develop problems in the future. I've had 4 abdominal surgeries and the chances of developing an adhesion are greater with each surgery. However, I feel great and will deal with whatever comes up and will know that I made the right choice - I made a choice to live!

Hello, I'm just a few days shy of being 9 months post op lap BPD with no DS.. I have had no complications to speak of. It's virtually impossible to tell who will have complictions and who won't.. I know of people with no co-morbidities who had horrendous complications, and I know of people in very fragile health who sailed through with no problems. I truly believe that they key is knowing as much as you possibly can about your surgery, having absolute trust in your surgeon, and having the right attitude. At least this seemed to work for me. ~Peace

I haven't had any major problems come up. Nothing except nausea which is to be expected when one is relearning to eat. I'm feeling pretty fantstic at 5.5 months out. What exactly are you referring to?

I am one year post-op, and have had NO problems! I have only thrown up three times, and that was in the first 6 months, I am no longer on diabetes meds, or meds for high blood pressure. I have gone from 288 pounds to 178 pounds with about 24 more pounds to goal. My incision healed beautifully, and I would do this surgery again anytime! Theresa- open rny 2-22-02.

Well honestly I have had two troublesome ones. My backside lost ALL its padding, sitting on hard seats HURTS. Plus I am COLD all the time, having lost my permanent fat coat. :):):) Once your post op for awhile the most common problems for long termers appears to be hernias, altogether avildable by having surgery LAP. Life is a trade off. True I might have problems in many years. But I wouldnt of lived a long time at my old weight. See the very bottom of my profile for info on barb thompsons great book that covers all this and more. She is a member here who had surgery and wrote a book about it.

One year post op in two weeks and no problems here other than the obvious ones that Bob stated. My backside is skinny and hurts to sit on hard chairs, and I am cold all the time. Other than that I can't say that i have had any significant problems.

I am almost 15 months post-op and I've really only had one problem that was connected in any way to the surgery. I did have an internal suture work lose and get in the pouch and cause a blockage - an endoscoopy took care of that. I've had some medical problems but they weren't due to the surgery. In fact, because I am now more aware of my health and tending to things more because I don't hesitate to go to the doctor, I've found and been treated for a condition that I had and didn't know about. So, my health is much better now than before the surgery. Some of the side effects of the surgery are being able to walk long distances with out having pain and trouble breathing, being able to sit in the tub and take a long hot bath, sitting in booths, not worring about chairs breaking, not crowding other people when you sit in a crowded room, being able to go to movies and sit comfortably, and most importantly, being healthy. I'd do it again without even thinking about it.

I am 17 mos post op. I was very healthy to begin with so I was not all that concerned with the complications that could come up. But then I dont really obsess about much. I have had to have my galbladder removed and an ulcer removed. I went through all of last spring summer and early fall in severe pain due to these two issues. And because of the last surgery to remove my ulcer, it caused me to lose more weight very quickly because of the restricted eating from that type of surgery. I am now battling with my weight to keep it at a normal level instead of me wasting away to nothing. If I do not constantly eat, I lose and lose and lose. I'm sure this will stop eventually, but for now....im coping. <rolls eyes> There have been a couple of times during the past year that I have regretted my decision to have this surgery. But those times were usually during intense pain. The life that I have gained from doing this FAR outweighs the difficulties I have experienced. As a fat woman, my wieght was on my mind ALWAYS. It never went away, never was it at the back of my mind......it was associated in some way with every thought. For the first time in my entire life, I can honestly say that days go by without me even thinking about weight or food, or what people think of me. That kind of freedom and peace is priceless.
