Question:
I had a hernia repair a week ago and was told I have nerve damage, anyone else?

I've been very sick with pancreatitis and just had surgery to remove my gallbladder and while they were doing that they fixed my hernia (that they or me didn't know I had till they were doing the surgery) and now I have this awful burning pain a week and a few days later from the hernia repair. I was told that it was nerve damage and one Dr. said it would eventually go away, but another said it lasted a long time. It's horrible. It's like someone is pouring acid on my skin and there's nothing I can do to relieve it, but lie down. Anyone else have this with their surgery? The Dr. said it's common in all types of surgey, where they have to cut through the skin.    — Ladybug M. (posted on July 13, 2003)

I had severe pain after a breast biopsy back in 1998. It also was from nerves being cut. I does go away, but you have to let it take it's course.

I had something similar after my WLS in May 2002 but it was in my legs. I had complete numbness on the outsides of both thighs right above my knees. On the left side the area was about 10" long by 5" wide and on the right side it was about 6" long by 4" wide. From time to time I would have horrible stabbing pains, especially on the left side. Only until the last 2 months has the pain gone away and most of the feeling is back. It does take time and, I hate to say it, but there really isn't anything that can be done. Mine was caused by being on my back for so long during and after the surgery. I had an accident in 1999 and really messed up my back so lying down so much really caused a lot more damage. Just try to be patient, I know the pain is awful, but it really does get better every day. It seemed that if I rubbed the area or put a heating pad on it that seemed to help at least a bit. Good luck.
