Question:
losing so slowly

I DO NOT MEAN TO SOUND LIKE A WHINY LITTLE BABY, HOWEVER HERE IT GOES. I HAD SURGERY 14 WEEKS AGO AND HAVE SLOWLY LOST WEIGHT. I TRY NOT TO COMPARE MYSELF WITH OTHERS, HOWEVER I CAN WITH MYSELF AND I LOST THE SAME RATE ON ORDINARY DIETS EATING THREE TIMES MORE FOOD! I GUESS IT IS A LITTLE DEPRESSING BECAUSE I FIGURED WITH THE SURGERY I WOULD LOSE QUICKER, BECAUSE I AM EATING HARDLY NOTHING. IT MAKES ME WONDER WHY I WENT THROUGH WITH ALL THE PAIN AND GRIEF OF HAVING THE SURGERY WHEN I COULD HAVE LOST THE WIEGHT AT THE SAME RATE WITHOUT THE SURGERY AND STILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY FOOD SOMETIMES. I AM SORRY IF I SOUND LIKE A DOWNER, BUT I NEED TO VENT, AND THANK GOD YOU GUYS ARE HERE. I GUESS I REALLY DID NOT HAVE A QUESTION, JUST CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW I COULD EAT APPROX 500 TO 800 CALORIES A DAY WITH EXCERSIZE AT LEAST THREE TIMES A WEEK AND LOSE THE SAME AS WHEN I DID NOT EXCERSIZE AT ALL AND ATE 1300 CALORIES A DAY! I DID IT BEFORE AND LOST 105 POUNDS IN 9 MONTHS! YES I KNOW I DID GAIN IT BACK, BUT STILL.......    — kimberly S. (posted on April 8, 2002)

Increase your protein. Increase your water. Increase your exercise. Shake your metabolism up! Check out: vita4life.net or give another protein supplement a go. I threw up so many that when I finally got to this one, it was the winner for me. I mix it in a bottle of water with an ounce or two of flat, diet-orange soda. Many of us lose more weight when we are not starving our bodies. And I have never returned to flour, sugar, rice, pastas or caffeine. I eat whole grains, real foods and no processed foods. I also eat fish every single day at least once. My RNY was 6/20/01 and I am down 146 pounds. Barb

Hey Kimberely, I feel the same way as you. I do not think I am getting enough calories in, so I have upped them a bit, starting today. I had slacked off the protein shake, but only for a while, started that again too. My scale has not moved for over 3 weeks, brisk walking 2 miles everyday. water etc...I asked a dear friend who had surgery,(same surgeon as ours), and she said I was not taking enough calories in. I guess I was always afraid of doing damage. I lost 11 pounds first week, then only 4 the next.Read my profile. Good luck...marie

I think you answered your own question in the last sentance. You did it before and gained it all back. This time, you will be able to keep it off. Just a few questions about your diet though, are you getting enough protien? I know, everybody pushes protien, but I believe it is one of the keys to doing well. Keep up the good work and remember, as slow as it might be coming off, it is coming off and you aren't gaining it all back. Knowing that alone is worth all the pain to me.

Kimberly, don't dispair! I went through the same thing. I was such a slow loser at first, and it was soooo frusterating! But everyone is different. I had my surgery in Sept. of 2001, and when I went to my Dr. on Dec. 14th, I had lost only 34 lbs, and I felt that was very slow compared to others, but the next month I lost another 22 lbs! I seem to lose in spurts. Anyway , I have lost 82 lbs in 6 months and I am very glad since I have only around 100 lbs to lose. Hope this encourages you, I still seem to lose quickly one month and then slack off. I am just glad the scales are going down. After some time has passed and you can really tell it on yourself the amount of time it takes won't matter. I wish you the best. Patti Meadows/ e-mail: [email protected]

I agree that you aren't getting enough cals in. Your body needs 700-800 calories to survive and function properly. Because you are being so good with your exercise, your activity level makes your body need more calories or it thinks you are starving it. Try eating an extra healthy snack each day, I think that would help you. I am also a slow loser, so I understand how frustrating it can be. But take a deep breath and think about how you will NOT gain this back. All the work will be worth it, you just need to continue to use your 'tool' correctly. Good Luck!

So ..... If you gained it back you never really lost it. I'm going to guess that you like all of us gained and lost a lot of lbs. When your stomach heals you will again be able to eat 1300 kcals. And if you go to a party and binge you may eat 2000 kcals, but you won't be able to eat 6000 kcals. This gives you a great chance not to gain it all back. The differance between now and then is you may have control over food rather than visa versa--- Good Luck
