Question:
I'm 2 weeks out, and getting hiccups on a regular basis

I'm in the pureed stage, and can eat about 3oz's. I'm doing it now as I type. They'll last for about 20 minuts. I even got them in the hospital. The nurse laughed at me. I've tried a small spoonfull of jellO (eventhough I can't stomach the stuff no pun intended) I've tried drinking water, putting my fingers in my ears to put pressure on the vargus nerve, deep breathing and about 100 other things I could think of to try. Pre op, I would take a tablespoon of sugar, and that would work, but now I'm post op, that is not an option. They usualy go away after about 20 mins but is painful while it lasts. Hello! I, too, have hiccups. Even at four months postop. Everytime I eat (and sometimes after drinking) anything, I will have them. They were worse in the beginning and not so much now. I remember the nurses laughing at me while still in the hospital-- they thought I was having a seizure or something and when I told them it was a hiccup they busted out laughing. (I was laughing, too). I asked my physician about it and it was the first he had heard. He did tell me that they will probably go away in time. They are beginning to. I just wish that they were not so loud and shrilly. When I say loud, I mean if I am in a resturant and if I just happen to hiccup after eating people from across the room - like 20 feet or so away - look in my direction. It wouldn't be so bad if they were so loud. They hurt, too. I haven't tried anything to get rid of them, they just subside on their own. Believe it or not, they are getting fewer and fewer and last week I didn't hiccup at all. (then, when someone mentioned that they had disappeared, they returned). Such is life. Trust me, they will diminish in time and you will hardly notice them at all. Good luck to you in your journey. Try eating slower and keeping your mouth shot when you eat. Somehow too much air is going in when you eat. Sometimes eating with a straw will cause this. That is when I get them the most.

If you get any back pain, along with the hiccups, this could be a sign of a leak according to my doc. Not to worry you, but just FYI.

Funny, didn't happen to me until I was about 6 months out - I think as I could eat more, I ate faster :>( Had to slow down again.
