Question:
How much protein to drink at one time?

I'm getting mixed messages about how much protein to drink at one time.I'd like to hear how much everyone else is drinking at one time for a meal. How many protein drinks to you have in one day. I was told to have the Carnation Instant Breakfast (sugar free) plus scoop of protein with milk (or lactaid) three times a day. I am 2 weeks post-op (RNY proximal). Thanks.    — Betty Todd (posted on January 23, 2001)

Michelle Curran is the person to ask and I suspect she will respond. Just remember that our bodies will only absorb 30 grams of protein at one given time. I personally like the ProBlend 55 - mix one scoop with 4 ounces of water and you get 27.5 grams of protein per drink.

I'm SO predictable! 30g is top end for us. But that's of the predigested kind. 30g in one shot is max for normies who are not working out 3-4 hours a day, every day, too. So, there's not much hope we're even getting 30g. The milk + CIB is not pre-digested, so the rule doesn't really apply. You would only get 50% of the protein in those products AT THE MOST, even if you are very proximal. You will get 100% of the sugars in them, however. You would have to drink about a half gal of them to reach 30g of useable protein, but you'd be unconscious from all the sugar long before you got it down, I'd guess.
