Question:
Is it normal to fantasize about your surgeon?

I have not had a libido for about 7 years. However, since my surgery I have had sexual feelings about my surgeon. Am I a sicko or is this some normal reaction I am having to a wonderful man helping and caring for me? Has anyone else felt this way for their surgeon?    — [Anonymous] (posted on June 16, 2001)

Patients developing 'a crush' on them happens all the time to alot of docs. I developed a crush on the guy who radically altered my life by successfully treating my asthma when I was 19. I mean I had it bad...wrote him love letters, pined, the whole thing. Jeesh! How embarassing. I then saw him about 15 years later. It was a bit awkward because of how silly I had acted. However, he was very gracious and said that if the worse thing I ever did was fall in love with someone that it was OK. <SIGH> Ain't being human fun?

I had to giggle at this question, not at you but at me. I just want you to know that you're not alone. And I thought I was the only one! I have a crush on my gynecologist (he's young & cute & Fillipino - those cute black eyes)!!! I've even had a crush at first (it's over now) on my counselor, and she's a woman (I even had lesbian dreams about her & me; I was really distressed by these feelings for her). I don't know why this happens to me. I've been HAPPILY married to my husband of 12 yrs. (and I believe myself to be strait). I seem to develop these crushes on people who care for and take care of me - medical people. I'm even trying to impress a married guy at my church who's an EMT. As for my surgeon, I do talk about him more often & get excited about seeing him. If there's any shrinks out there, I hope you can read this and let us know WHY this happens and whether this is normal or not.

I am preop and have only seen my surgeon once, but he is so charming and so absolutely fabulously looking. He is handsome enough to be a movie star....sort of a combination of Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson all in one. No fantasies here, but nothing wrong with a doc that is not hard on the eyes. Seriously, as one person has already responded, I think caring for someone, male or female, who is helping you to change your life in such a dramatic way is very normal. The level of "normalcy" depends, of course, on how far ones imagination takes this attraction. Don't some women feel a closeness to their gynecologist while they are going through pregancy and delivery? Same thing I think.

I laughed when I saw this question because I have the same thing going for my PCP, and I'm married! LOL My Dr. is soo cute, and for some reason when I found out he got divorced, he just became incredibly much more handsome. My husband knows I have a harmless crush on him, I always tell him that if we ever get divorced that I'm going to fake an illness to get into see my PCP, hehehe!! But I don't think there is anything wrong with your crush or feelings. Dr.'s , are supposed to be kind and compassionate, the big word here is compassionate, many are not, so when you do find one that is caring, and supportive and has just helped you make a major breakthrough in your life, it's normal to have admiration/feelings for that person. Now when I met my surgeon, I thought he was a nice guy, and he's attractive, but not my type, but who knows, after surgery he may become much more handsome too.

It's hard to judge what is "normal" and what isn't these days, but I think this is a common thing...I have had a little crush on my surgeon too, but I know this is just a manifistation of my gratitude and feeling of closeness to someone who so altered my life for the better. The best way for me to deal with this is acknowledge it to myself and referr anyone considering the surgery to him!!
