Question:
Is it common to be on the ventilator after surgery?
MY FRIEND JUST HAD SURGERY AND HAD TO BE ON IT FOR A DAY AND IT REALLY SCARED HIM. HOW COMMON IS IT TO HAVE THIS AFTER SURGERY? I'M PRE-OP AND CONCERNED ABOUT THIS SINCE HIS EXPERIENCE. THANKS — [Anonymous] (posted on November 30, 2001)

We ALL get intubated but very very few are kept on a vent once out of
recovery. They keep those on happy juice so they dont get too anxious. It
was certinally done for their safety. Severe sleep apnea sometimes cause
breathing problems post op. I would ask my surgeon if its likely for you,
the surgeon best knows you and your risk factors. I wouldnt worry about it.
Drugs would keep you from caring.

I was on a ventilator for 48 hours after surgery, requiring my spending
that time in ICU. We knew I had pulmonary difficulties to begin with.
Talk with your doctor to determine the probability, especially if you have
asthma, sleep apnea, etc. Best wishes--
