It doesn't matter how long you've had to wait - it is your body and YOU have the right to decide which surgery you think is best for you. If you want the RNY then that's what you should have. Just think how you might feel if two years down the road things don't work out with the VBG (they sometimes don't so VBG'rs don't yell at me) - you'd be sorry if you didn't have the RNY if this happens to you. I guess I don't understand how you could get this far in the process and find out you're scheduled for a type of surgery other than what you expected. Good luck - I hope things work out for you.

First thing Monday morning, call your surgeon's office about this. It is very possible that a mistake was made when the surgery was scheduled. If not and you do not want to have the VBG, then you need to talk with the surgeon about this.

I agree with the other posts. Do NOT settle for what you do not want. It's a good thing you found out before you had the surgery though. Good luck ...keep us posted.

I know that not everyone has a bad experience with the VBG but I did.... it was too easy to gain it all back... I had a revision to the RNY less than 4 months ago.... I would not settle for any surgery other than the one you want!

Why not ask the surgeon if he can do the RNY instead of the banding during the time scheduled? Does he do RNY's? I don't see why he can't just do teh RNY instead of the banding. Getting the change for your insurance approval should be able to happen in time if everyone is on the ball ASAP. If not, wait. It will be worth it. The best of luck to you.

i had surgery on 1-7-03, and remembered seeing VBG on my post-op papers.....not until today, when i was browsing through all the Q&As noticed the surgery called"VBG" did i realize that i did not have the RNY i had asked for and planned for .....i suspect that i only had the VBG!!!

This goes out to the first post after the question. If you think you had the wrong surgery... I would go back to the hospital and get your records. I work for a hospital (ortho/surg/med unit) and we ALWAYS have the patient sign a form explaining the surgery they are about to do. Please look there. Then go to your doctor and get the records. Good luck.

It was my understanding that a Vertical Banded Gastric Bypass is different from a VBG. I had a VBG, there was no bypassing involved. It sounds like you are getting a combination of the two - a RNY with a ring around the stoma. This is sometimes referred to a Fobi. They do the ring with the bypass to keep the stoma from stretching too much. With all that being said, double check with your surgeon. Make very sure that you are getting some kind of bypass if that is what you want and are expecting.
