Question:
Am I done losing? Your experiences, please....

I started at 287.8. Open RNY 7/17/01. I have lost 85-87 lbs (I say between those two amounts, because I have been gaining and losing the same 2 pounds for three weeks!) I will be honest, during the first six months, I was not as faithful to my food program (or exercise) as I should have been. Then, last month, I got on fitday.com and got serious with the food - and a little more serious with the exercise. Last month, I lost 8 lbs. Now, I seem to be at a standstill right at 200-202 lbs. I am bummed. While I am so very grateful to be where I am, I still want to reduce. I started at a size 26/28/30 and now wear a 16W in nice suits, 18 in jeans. So, I have lost - but no where the amount I had hoped/planned with this surgery. If you started about where I was -- and have continued to lose beyond 9 months - please, please respond. Thanks!! Best to all.    — blee01 (posted on April 7, 2002)

Bobbi, I am 15 months out and I'm still loosing... slowly, but still loosing. I was in about a 3 month plateau. Gained and lost the same 5 pounds. However, I did start to loose again this month. I started at 337 and am not at 185. You're doing great!

Bobbi, Have you done your measurements? If you have started to exercise again, you could be losing inches even if you are not losing weight. And no, fat does not weigh more than muscle, but it does take up more space. Think of it this way. If you held an ounce of unpopped popcorn in your hand, it would fit easily, but an ounce of popped corn would too much for you to hold. The fat is like the popped corn and the muscle like the unpopped. Anyway, with exercise you can lose fat and gain muscle, so you're smaller even if you weigh the same.

Yeah I pretty much much quit losing weight at 6 months out. Tomarrow will be month eleven. I'm bummed too. I weight between 188-194. I'm short too so it is alot of weight to still carry. I can't believe the people who say they have lost their weight "permanately" and "never will have to diet again". I think they've been smoking wacky tobaci. I fought with my weight pre op and still do.

Hi Bobbi! I feel the same way. I have lost very slowly, but pretty steady (-105 lbs; RNY open 1/8/01). I think my problem is eating too many carbs, very very little veggies, I do eat fruit (probably wrong kind...bananas) and very little exercise. I went to the store to day and decided to start taking my lunch to work so I can have some control over what I eat (i.e., mayo, carbs, etc.) and I'll commit to exercise. I do want to lose the last 25 lbs. Good luck to you!

I too feel "stuck" at my weight loss. I lost the most weight during the first 6 months and now I feel as if I will never lose anymore. This month will be a year since my surgery and I've only lost 76 pounds. I should have lost at least 100 by now. I felt too embarassed to even post a question regarding this, mainly because I feel like I've failed in some way. Has anyone overcome this situation and if so, how?

Hi, I started at a little less than you, at 246 (although that was the official pre-op visit weight, I definately gained at least 10 pounds more before surgery!)and am now 5 pounds below goal weight at 10 months post op I lost 116 pounds and weigh 130!). My doctor told me long ago that the first 6 months the weight would come off no matter what, at least 65% of it, but the rest was going to be up to me! He told me that I would have to use my tool wisely, and I have taken that advice seriously. It sounds like you have gotten serious about your eating, so I would have to say that exercise seems to be where you could really help boost the loss. I know it is hard to really get motivated, but I promise that once you get started you will come to look forward to it! Even if time is a factor, just try to get in every bit that you can, take a walk during a lunch break, Do situps at night while watching TV, anything to get started. I am so busy running a business and chauffering my family everywhere, but exercise is the one thing I demand to do for myself, and nothing gets in the way! I also really watch everything I eat, and now it has become so normal for me to want to eat only good things that I can't imagine ever going back to old habits. Don't get me wrong, I get cravings! But I have learned to substitue the bad stuff for healthier things that still satisfy. Do what everyone says, get in as much protein as you can in a day, drink all that water, and even with those plateaus that are completely normal, you can and will maximize your weight loss. If you need any support at all to get things going and keep them going, I am always glad to help! Best of luck and keep the faith, YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
