Question:
Why Am I At A Standstill?

I am 6 weeks postop from open RNY. I started at 295 lbs. and now weigh about 259lbs. I lost 36 pounds in about four weeks, but for the last two weeks....NOTHING! I thought maybe because it was that time of the month was why I wasn't losing. But now that it has come and gone...and still no weight loss (and NO INCHES EITHER), I am really scared. Is it normal to have a plateau so soon out and for two whole weeks? I am afraid that maybe I am not getting ENOUGH calories in and my body is in starvation mode. But, I don't WANT to eat more and I get sick trying to. I know this may sound dumb..but I was never really a big eater before surgery. I have been heavy since I was just a baby no matter what I ate or how I dieted. I am getting about 55-65 grams of protein in a day, about 45-55 ounces of water and about 30 minutes of high impact exercise in daily. I am really happy with my weight loss already...so please don't tell me how appreciative I should be. I already am! I just am scared that I am one of those people who wont lose any more weight. How long before I should be really worried?    — Shawnie S. (posted on September 1, 2002)

Congrats on your weightloss so far! :) I know the plateaus can be soo frustrating! I had 2 in the first 2 months, and I am only 3 months post-op so far, so I have a feeling I will have quite a few more to come! I know it's been hard for me to eat, i don't feel like it either, but maybe you can look at what you are eating and try to increase the protein, and keep it at the higher end of 65-70 grams a day. The more protein you get, the faster the weight loss. Also, 45-55 ounces of water a day isn't enough, unless you are drinking other fluids. So you may be dehyrdated, You need atleast 64oz a day. I know it's really hard to get in alot, but try adding lemon or drinking crystal lite or diet snapple, that counts as fluids, according to my surgeon, and that should help with weight loss. I wish you the best. Plataus can last 2 weeks (mine did) or longer, so don't be scared!! You're doing fine, just make sure you eat, you don't want your body to starve!

I had my first platau after four weeks. It's scarey I know. But it will pass. Just keep doing what you are supposed to and the weight loss WILL kick in again. You're body is taking a short breather like we do when we are tired. ;)

I had a plateau 3 weeks out and then 5 weeks out and somewhere in there only lost 1 lb and just got over another one last week and this week just lost 2. If you are walking you may be building muscle. Or, you may not be getting in enough calories, protein, etc. It is not the end of the world, I am 4 1/2 months out and down 80 lbs, it will all work itself out eventually. I wish you the best.

Your platue will pass, for me it seemed like when I was in that rapid weight loss phase in the begining, I was always tired. When I would hit a platue my body was just taking a well deserved breather! And I learned to welcome it after awhile. I know it sounds strange but I did. Patience is the key...it takes time to lose that weight, and the time frame is nothing in comparison to how long it took us to get to this point in our life. Good luck

I had a plateau at that exact same period. It lasted about a week and a half. And then all of a sudden I started losing again. Don't worry it will pass. I'm just 8 weeks out so it really scared me too.

I have been a plateau queen. I plateau every month at least once. I have just learned that my body is doing something right at that time because people always say "oh my god you are getting so skinny" during the two weeks I haven't lost a pound (or an inch)! ha. And then a week or two down the line I start to notice what everyone else was noticing. I try all kinds of different things when I plateau, more and more protein shakes, less and less carbs, more calories, less calories. I think the only thing that fixes a plateau is time!
