Question:
After 3 weeks, I have only lost 19 pounds. Is this normal?

Everyone else seems to be down so much more! Granted, I started at 224, but I am already feeling like a failure. I have followed my doctor's instructions, 3 meals a day, meats and veggies only. I drink between 6-8 glasses of water a day and take my vitamins. Has anyone else had a similar experience?    — Elizabeth S. (posted on September 19, 2002)

I read your profile and you stated that your Dr. said you should "average" 3 lbs. a week, so at 3 weeks you are already 10 lbs. more than your average. Please don't let yourself get discouraged, the weight will come off if you are following Dr.'s orders. Granted, you probably would have lost 19 lbs on the old diets, but would you have kept if off. You are at an emotional stage of your surgery and this too shall pass. Happy losing!

That is a great weight loss!!!!! You have lost 6.33333 lbs a week!! If that rate keeps up you will lose 25 lbs a month and 100 lbs in 4 mos!!!!! Don't judge your weight loss by anyone elses here. We all lose at our own pace. You are doing fine. We all think that we will lose all of our weight fast and in a few weeks. It just doesn't happen. Stay calm. You will see your lbs just fall off right before your very eyes!!!! It is an unbelieveable process.

I'm gonna say something that you probably will laugh at...your starting weight made you what is called a light weight. You could have expected to lose a little slower than someone who topped 300. To lose 19 lbs in 3 weeks is fabulous. You are doing everything right. Stop worrying. It's time for you to start walking for exercise. This will help keep the loss going. And it'll give you more energy. Be patient and remember, you're doing fine. I started out at 252, lost 5 before surgery, then only lost about 14 in the first 3 weeks. You'll experience slow days. Don't weigh every day. You'll drive yourself crazy. Pick a day each week, mine is Saturday, and record your weight on a calendar, then at the end of each month compare the first Saturday to the last, you'll be thrilled month after month. This tool is working just like it's supposed to for you. Keep up the great work.

Hi, Elizabeth! I know exactly where you are coming from...I am almost 12 weeks out and down 50 lbs. But, I too was considered a "lightweight" and it has been slow going from week 4 on. I have had a number of plateaus and have been discouraged with each one! Remember, your protein, water and exercise and the pounds will fall off! Please don't compare yourself to others - I know it is easier said than done. I find myself doing it too, then catch myself. Feel free to read my profile and contact me to correspond. Keep up the great work!

Hi! Sounds like you are doing great! I went and looked at my charts and at 3 weeks post op I had lost 15 pounds. BUT, I had gained 10 pounds during surgery from all the fluids and I lost that too. (pre op started at 245, went up to 255 after surgery, then by three weeks post op, down to 230) I really would NOT worry. I know it is so hard not too though! It is the craziest thing, watching that weight fall off. I think we all go through times when we feel like the surgery won't work for us, or that we are failures. I think you are completely normal! I'm 5 months post op and down from 245 to 160 at 5'3". The weight is still coming off too. Feel free to check out my profile if you want. Good luck!

Elizabeth, remember, you only have to loose 10 pounds a month to loose 100 pounds in 10 months. Wouldn't you be thrilled with that result? You are already ahead of the game if you look at it that way.

hi there! just wanted to tell you you are doing great. i remember thinking this at firt too. i was 370 so i expected it to fall off over night. im now down over 140 lbs and feel great but in the beginning i was wondering if this would work for me. remember your body is freaked but what its just been through, it needs to adjust and it too needs to get rif of the water weight from surgery. i was pumped wiht fluids before surgery and i woke up with huge swollen hands and face was more pudgy looking too. as soon as your body calms down and your water weight goes away it will be all good. give yourself a good 3 months and i promise you will be very pleased! best of luck to you :)
