Question:
Anyone eat baby food post op?

I never minded the taste of it and I thought it might be an economical and good way to get in fruits and veggies, anyone else do this?    — Sarah S. (posted on February 14, 2003)

You should start off eating soft food. Like scrambled eggs wit cheese. If you stick with liquid meals then your stomach wont expand. That is a problem that lot of people have. Just start soft foods like pureed chicken, tuna fish and stuff like that. A little hint. On puree and heat up what you plan to eat. Other wise what happens is that the food tends to loose moisture and gets hard to stomach. At this point you dont want that. Go ahead and use you protein shake. Just make sure that you eat a little food with some substance to help you later on. By the way I an 13 months post op and lost 190 lbs.

Check the sugar g on each jar. Remember that baby food is designed to pack the wt onto babies. Not the same goal we have. If it's over say 6g per jar, it's too much sugar.

Sarah, one jar of baby food and that was my last. The stuff is awful!! I don't know how babies do it! I never tried the fruits, though, so maybe they are better. I skipped the pureed stage, just couldn't do it, and went to soft (some very soft) foods.

Funny you should mention that....I was wondering the same thing. I went to the grocery store just today and bought some Gerber rice cereal in single serving packets. I am pre-op (2/24/03!!!) and used to love Cream of Wheat. I bought some a few weeks and ago, but when I fixed it, it tasted so salty I couldn't eat it. I remember that when my kids were babies I always thought their rice cereal wasn't bad at all. Weird, huh? My youngest is 9 years old so my memory may be a bit skewed. I might change my mind quickly after the first spoonful! I don't think I could tolerate the baby food meats or veggies though.

I bought 3 jars of baby food pre-op to have on hand after surgery if I didn't feel like cooking anything. I tried it once - yuck! If I had known it was that bad, I would never have given it to my kids! Pass unless you can't tolerate anything else.

hi..i did some baby foods post op and found it to work really well. (gastric by pass 12.18.02) honestly i only did the fruits. warch the labels you DO NOT want to use anything with sugar added...could result in dumping. i also made some home made soups and it worked out well. good luck!

I thought about doing the same thing, but am glad I did not. I came out of surgery with a need for tasty foods. I find that bland foods are not worth eating. As I remember from when my girls were babies, their food was very bland. I think I'd gag on baby food! However, your tastes may do other things, so it never hurts to try. <br>

Oh my, oh my! I tried baby food. Once. It was horrible! I tried to give it to my cat and she wouldn't even eat it! Threw it away and gave the rest to the Salvation Army. For me, it was a big waste of $. Of course, it was a meat one I tried, fruits might be better. (They sure couldn't be worse!!)

I bought some as I wanted to know what I was going to be having to do after surgery. Awful stuff so I went out and bought a small baby grinder to grind up small amounts instead of using my blender. I am sure the fruit and veg would be allot better but I tried the meat. I saved the jar to use for a craft project. That was the only thing good that came from that experience. LOL Barbara

Baby food is designed to put weight on babies who weigh something like 12 pounds who are taking in a couple hundred calories a day. It will not put weight on a 200 # + adult. Look at the calorie content and use your common sense for heavens sake. That said , baby food is wretched tasting and I pity the poor baby that has to eat it. a mini food processor is your friend, you can make some tasty stuff and blend it right into a puree in seconds.
