Question:
Looking for support here

I am almost two months out. At 5 weeks I was dilated. I didn't have enough sedation so the experience was horrible. Eating has been hard from the begining. I have had to elimintae all dairy. I have trouble eating anything. Even drinking water can be painful. After the dilation I was ok for that night. The next day it was the same. I have slowed down my eating...thinking it could be me. I have eliminated a lot of food because I just don't want to hurt. I am also afraid to eat because I am afraid it might hurt. I know this is hurting me. What can I do. The surgeon wants to wait another 3 weeks to give the small ulcer they found time to heal. If I am the same I get to have another barium swallow. Today I ate 1/2 slice of peanut butter on toast. Natural..no sugar. and about half a cup of chicken barley soup. Mostly broth. That is it. My stomach hurts a lot right now. Anyone out there that past through this to the other side? My support group tells me it will get better. I have lost 60 pounds so far. Thanks    — armonce G. (posted on April 7, 2003)

I have had 2 dialations also and the first one I did not get enough sadation either. This last one I ask the doctor to please give me more and he said NO PROBLEM....I remember the meds in the IV then I WOKE UP IN RECOVERY. If I were you I would just ask for more meds and your experience wont be as bad as the first time....I know its awful while you are wide awake!!!! your wt loss is GREATTTTTTTTT!!!!

I know it is tough to hear, but it does get better. It sounds like the ulcer may be your main problem right now if you hurt after eating. I assume you are taking medicine for it? Try drinking some protein shakes made with milk-it may sooth the tummy if you are not lactose intolerant, and you need to get in more protein.

I'm still pre-op so please don't be offended if I come off sounding ignorant. Could it be fiber in your diet maybe? My surgeon told us that we will probably have a difficult time with fiber. Barley is high in fiber and maybe your toast is also. I hope you feel better soon. God bless.
