Question:
I will be 4 1/2 weeks post op on the 4th of July and I was wondering>>>

If I could have a beer or two?    — Patra R. (posted on June 27, 2003)

My doctor told me no alcohol at all for a year at least. Also no carbonated drinks, beer is both of them so I would say at 4 and a half weeks stay away from it.

My doctor advised me to wait at least 6 weeks. I must tell you even 11.5 months post-op OPEN RNY drinking (alcohol) is still a challenge.

Come on now! Alcohol at this early stage. Why go through this type of procedure only to put empty calories in your body. I don't think alcohol is beneficial to gastric bypass patients, but hey, to each's own. Good luck!

What does your surgeon say? My first alcohol was at 3 months post-op but not because I had a certain time frame it was allowed in. If you do try a beer, just be very careful and sip slowly. The effects of alcohol hit us faster and harder with our rearranged intestines.

Consider a couple of things. Beer is loaded with carbs, and alcohol itself is pure sugar. Would you eat an ice cream cone at this point? Just a thought. :)

I have heard different surgeons explain the reasons and length of the carbonation ban. I have had small amounts (no more than 3/4 of a bottle that took me about 45 minutes to drink) of the low-carb lite beer-- I also just tried Edison Beer which is a lite/low-carb beer that I was also pretty good. It wasn't bad, but be warned that you will be a cheap drunk.

the reason I was told to avoid alcohol during that great window of losing was that when we are losing mass amounts of weight (waste) our kidneys are working double and triple time to wash the fat and waste from our bodies. They are under extreme strain. Adding alcohol to that can be deadly! I would highly discourage drinking more than a sip or two of any alcohol until you've at least slowed your weight-loss down to a trickle (and then you don't want to because it slows it down even more haha). Darned if you do....Good luck!

I would avoid drinking ANY alcohol for at least 6 months; a year would be even better. My surgeon asks his patients to NEVER drink beer. And, remember, just a little alcohol will makey you quite intoxicated.
