Question:
Why won't the scale move???

Hi! I'm 6 months post op, -102 pounds (which I feel great about!) but the weight loss is definately slowing down. Last month I only lost 8 pounds, and now the scale is stopped, and it's been that way for about 2 1/2 weeks. I don't know what to do to kick it into moving again! I'm eating protein and I exercise at the Gym 3 days per week. I know I'm gaining muscle and sometimes that can keep the scale from moving, but this long? Any ideas on how I can start losing weight again would be great. Thanks! :)    — Deena C. (posted on August 24, 2003)

Nasty plateaus! Hate them!! May I suggest keeping a food diary? Jot down everything you put into your mouth. This includes your water. You might be surprised. If you find you are doing everything right, then relax and take your measurements. Sometimes the scales are the LAST to show your weight loss accomplishments. Bet you are losing inches even though the scales are being contrary. Hang in there. These darn plateaus come and go and can drive you nuts! (Open Rny 10/30/02 minus 189)

I hit a plateau for the entire month of July. I am 11 months post op and I knew the day was coming. I didn't lose weight or gain. The scale was just still. Believe it or not, I still counted that as success. However, we all do want to see those numbers go down. Even though the numbers didn't move in a month, I went down 2 dress sizes in a month. To me that success. I attribute that to the fact that I have been strength training for the past couple of months. I love it. Anyway, I had a visit with my dietician 2 weeks ago; she told me if I wanted the numbers to move on the scale, I may have to drop my calorie intake. So last week I did. I tracked my calories through fitday.com and stayed around 900-1000 calories. I lost 7 lbs in 1 week. I'm now part of the century club. Down 101lbs. My best, April - 334/233/160
