Question:
When did you start doing sit-ups?
I am 2 months post-op (lap rny) and curious as to when some of you began doing sit-ups. — Julie S. (posted on October 28, 2003)

I honestly can't remember exactly, but I think I was using the abdominal
machines at 6 weeks and by 2 months began sit ups. It seems that 8 1/2
months was forever ago. Good luck!!

My doctor said no restrictions on exercise at 3 weeks but I would
definitely ask the doctor before I started doing any abdominal stuff.

Ask your doc. We are already at risk for hernias, and sit ups pose a
danger from that angle. I was not allowed to do any strenuous exercise for
the first 3 months (and, I have no sign of any hernias!).

I started doing sit ups at two weeks post-op. My doc said nothing about it!
I was fine.

I was told one year for anything requiring a lot of gut muscle...but I'm
high risk for hernia being open and having had three abdominal open
surgeries in 10 years. YMMV!

I was told 8 weeks by my surgeon, and I had Open RNY.

Not until about 6-1/2 month PO. I went back to weight training at 9 weeks
but no abdominal work. I also had a hole in my incision till 4-1/2 months
and that's why I went extra cautious. However, when working out last night
(almost 9 months PO) I was doing some straight arm lat pulls and something
pulled a lot in the area of my incision that had to be redone - upper part.
I don't feel a hernia and hope it's just some tight tissue letting go but
it scared the heck out of me and it's sore today, so I will back off of
abdominal work for a few weeks and let that settle down. I'd make sure I
had my surgeon's blessing because being done LAP does not guarantee no
hernias.
