Question:
Help, My weight is comming off sooooooo slow....

Hi, I am currently almost four months post op and down only 43 lbs. I feel like the weight is comming off so slow. I am doing a ton of physical activity. Is this normal to have such slow weightloss? I'm just concerned.    — Erin E. (posted on July 25, 2004)

Erin: There's nothing wrong with losing slow, as long as it's coming off! Your starting weight kind of tells the tale here, don't you think. You were very much a "lightweight" at 230, so I think it's not surprising that your loss seems slower. In the non-WLS world, 43 pounds in 4 months would be a wonderful weight loss! I think we just tend to expect more of WLS sometimes. As long as you're doing everything according to plan, and the numbers keep going down instead of up, don't sweat it! Congrats and best wishes for your continued success. Lap RNY 9/11/03, 270/165/???

Hi Erin I have also lost about 45 lbs. I had DS surgery on April 5th this year. My weight was 208 before surgery. I was also worried about how slow I am losing, but I think it's because were I started from. If I lose another 45 in a year, I'll be thrilled. I exersize 4 times a week and get my protein and water in. What I do when things are so slow is I don't weight for a while. I set my goal at 10lb hurddles. Like I just weighed in at 159. I am jazzed. My next goal will be under 150. So there is nothing wrong with how slow we lose it, just that we keep going. I think it is a slow weight lost, but my friends call me the shrinking woman. Did you take your measurements before surgery? When I get frustrated I measure. I have lost over 25 inches. Don't panick. Sit back and enjoy the ride, your doing great. Keep up the good work

I too was a slow loser. I started out at 250 lb and I so desperately wanted to lose 100 lbs by my one year aniversary. Needless to say, it didn't happen and I thought my weight loss was over. I am 19 months post op now and down 112 lbs. Just keep at it. It will come off. God Bless.

Hi there! I'm a slow loser as well. I started at 251 and hit 5 months out yesterday, and am finally 53 lbs down. I am a bonafide slow loser, but am coming to terms that it is just my way of losing weight. My surgeon did tell me that many of us have bodies that are VERY efficient at holding onto fat- gotta love that one! Read my profile, I have it all in there about how I've questioned my slow loss as well. Stay positive and stay active, you are doing great! Shannon Open RNY 2/25/04, 251/198/140

It does make a difference in where you've started. If you are a light weight, you'll lose slower. However, make sure you are eating enough. You have to eat to lose! I was a slow loser too, but wasn't eating enough food. If you're exercising you're burning more also. Best of luck!

Hi Erin, I read your profile and I think you had the same bmi rate that I had when we had our surgeries. That would mean we are considered light weights. Most light weights lose their weight alot slower. Not all but the majority do. At times I would become frustrated but my doctor was always so happy that I was not losing so much at once. I think I averaged 5 pds a month at losing weight. Some months a little less and some months a little more. By the time I was 18 months I did reach my goal weight. I'm over two years out and I have been maintaining that goal. It looks like your doing great. Blessings <>< Geri
