Question:
Why have I had meat get stuck recently when it hadn't for months?

I am 16 months out from RNY, and for the past 2-3 months, I have had a problem eating meat (chicken, shrimp, pork.) I still try to take small bites, and eat slowly. The food gets stuck, and I'm in pain for hours, and usually vomit several times, though it's usually just foamy stuff. I had that happen back closer to the surgery, but I had months of reprieve. Why is it happening again?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on August 16, 2004)

There are all kinds of reasons, including none at all.:) And you know it's never too late for a stricture. But, I gotta say, in my personal experience, it's been real hot here this summer and I've had trouble staying hydrated enough. It's when I'm dry like that that sticking meat and the foamies seem to happen more.

This still happens to me from time to time. No realy rhyme or reason for it either. I am almost 3 years out.

at 2 1/2 yrs I had an increase of loosing it after eating, and could not eat or drink for the whole day, went to PCP, he prescribed protonix, wonderful!!, also sent me to gastro specialist, scoped me and found stoma a little small, so she stretched me some. Food was staying in tummy too long, so when I thought it was ok to drink.. I would get sick. Fixed it..but have gained 5# since. UGH!!

Inga...so odd to see this particular post today because the exact same thing has been happening to me lately. I had to have an EGD at about 8 weeks out to have my stoma stretched because of a stricture. Then, about 6 weeks ago, I started having problems again. I was secheduled for an EGD but got better and cancelled it. Then, today, I had two very small, well chewed bites of a chicken tender and the pain was horrific. I called the surgeon's office but didn't tell anyone there why I wanted to speak to a nurse. So, she called when she got a chance and I was feeling better at the time. She told me if I didn't get completely better in 2 hours to call her back and I'd have to come down there and get scoped or go to my ER here (I'm 2 1/2 hours from where I had surgery). She had me take a "meat tenderizer cocktail...1 tsp of meat tendersizer mixed with 2 oz of water...NASTY". I drank it and it was so gross, but I was feeling better already. Then, I had a few sips of water and was doing just fine when I decided to have a protein shake for supper and after only about 3-4 oz I was starting to hurt. I'll try again afterwhile and if it's not better I'll call my surgeon at home and see what I should do. Hope you feel better soon...be sure to call your surgeon because maybe some scar tissue has you obstructed. Your symptoms are exactly the same as what mine was when my stricture had to be opened. Good luck.
