Question:
Did bariatric surgery improve or cure your hypertension?

If so, please share your experience with people researching the benefits of bariatric surgery. What was your blood pressure before and after surgery? How much of which anti-hypertension medications where you taking each day before and after surgery?    — ericklein (posted on February 5, 2000)

I was on two blood pressure pills, Altace 2.5 and Maxide 25mg.. Now, the good news...I was taken off all blood pressure medication by my primary care physician as of 1/18/2000, another great life saving result of my weight loss of 59 lbs. as of 1/27/00, my blood pressure was 120/70 on that day and has remained so todate. I have never once been sorry I had this surgery it has saved my life in many ways.

I had an open Rny on 1-13-2000. I saw my PCP on 1-31-2000 and he completely stopped my BP medication. I hadn't been taking my Monopril (20mg) since the surgery and my BP on the 31st was 110 / 72. So, no more BP meds after just 18 days!!

Yes bariatric surgery has improved my hypertension. My blood pressure before surger and with medication was 140/98 most of the time. I used to take Cardizem 30 mg.-3 times per day, Lasix 40 to 60 mg daily and had even been as high as 80 mg. daily, potassium 8 meq 3 times daily. At 3 months post op lasix was reduced to 20 mg. daily potassium to-8 meq 2 times daily, and cardizem 30 mg twice daily. At 5 months post op I was put on 1-30 mg. cardizem daily and taken off of lasix and potassium. At 6 months post op I was taken off of all blood pressure medication and have remained off, with a blood pressure of 118/74 for the last 7 weeks. Eric, I was on HCTZ 25 mg/day prior to surgery. I've been on several different types of HBP meds. I stil had a BP of 140/90 most of the time. I had open RNY 1/13/00. I haven't had any HBP med since surgery. At 3 week check this week, BP was 110/70. I can't remember when it was that low. I had lost 21 pounds. Also had migraines at least once a month, none since surgery. Lou Ann

Yes, Yes, a thousand times Yes! Although I'm still taking my Lasix, we're about to reevaluate that. No more huge fluxuations in BP, no more monster headaches (or sleep apnea, snoring, swelling, whining....LOL, you get the idea.....)

I haven't taken any blood pressure medication since my surgery which was 3-21-01. Before, my bp was high with medication. Now it is real low. 160 or less over no more than 65.
