Question:
What are the signs/symptions for bowel obstruction/kinked bowel?

What are the symptoms of a bowel obstruction or a kinked bowel? How often,if at all, do you have a b/m with this? Is constipation and very hard stool movement a sign? Is it the same as an impacted bowel? Or is that something different? I drink 90+ ounces of water per day. When I had a catscan on my kidney in Feb. 2004, they mentioned my upper bowel seemed full. Didn't think anything about it till today. I am on Vicoden for hand surgeries, and had a HORRIBLE time with b/m today. Thought for sure I was dying and my whole insides were coming through. Sorry, to be graphic, but I need some quick answers because it is the weekend. I took the Fleet bowel prep, which help somewhat. Thanks AMOS land. There is a difference between a bowel obstruction and a bowel impaction.I do know that vicodin can cause constipation or diarrhea.

I had a bowel obstruction 2 weeks after my RNY surgery due to scar tissue. I vomited and had diarrhea throughout the night for nearly 12 hours straight until I could get to the ER.I was never so sick in my life nor could I believe how much I could vomit! I believe your problem is the pain killer. After I had my daughter ( 51 hours of labor and tons of pain killers ) I didn't poop for 2 weeks! Good luck.--Adele

I had a kinked bowel and it started out as a feeling of horrible gas pains that would not go away. I had diarrhea really bad and after being in the ER on iv fluids and morphine I started throwing up they did a ultrasound and didn't see anything (they thought I had a bad gallbladder) I ended up being transfered to the hospital that originally did my surgery and seeing that surgeon who ordered a cat scan and found the kink and did lap surgery to fix it. The pain ranked right up there with hard labor.

From what I know of vicodin that could be your whole problem. It is very much known for causing constipation. You need to ask your dr. about giving you something different for your pain. Hope it all clears up.

You would be looking for distended abdomen, pain, cramping, vomiting and liquid diarrhea. You may need to take a stool softener. I take Colace 100 mg twice a day. It makes a world of difference. Do you get enough fiber? My surgeon lets us use Benefiber. It is great and can be mixed in water, juice or food. No gritty taste either.

Kathy, don't mess around with this. If you don't feel better in 24 hours call your doctor and tell him all of the symptoms that you have listed here. Yes, prescription narcotics are known to cause constipation. But, call your doc any way! Take care.

I suffered from a horrendous strangulated internal mesenteric hernia (a bowel obstruction caused by the lap portal holes in the mesentary - as the weight came off, the internal fat decreased and the holes expanded. Yup - my intestines got caught inside!). I had two incidents previous to that in which I had sudden, severe abdominal pain and got very dizzy - almost passing out. Once I went to the local ER. They did tests and couldn't find anything. It is very difficult to diagnose and can be deadly. I finally got transferred to my surgeon's hospital (I requested this immediately upon going to my local ER, but it took almost 24 hours to get me there - on the verge of death). I had emergency surgery and had about 3-5 feet of small intestines removed because it was necrotic. It was the WORST pain in the world. When it is stuck and totally blocked, it will send you to the ER, no mistaking it. I threw up twice (something I never do). Sometimes the bowel can be 'coaxed back' into an untwisted position. In my case, it got stuck in a hole, so I think surgery was a given. It isn't easy to see even on ctscans. I've also experienced severe constipation - not to the point of imapaction, but pretty bad. My surgeon recommended milk of magnesia -- even an enema or suppository (to be used sparingly). Then, Colace to keep regular. I would get this checked out - I hope you feel better~ All the best, Teresa

The vicodan might be causing constipation which can be very painful..I had a kinked bowel 5 days after WLS. I was throwing up non-stop EVERYTHING until just bile was coming up. It was very painful and a horrendous experience requiring emergency surgery to correct.
