Question:
I am 3 weeks post op and the scale says I have lost 32 lbs. but I don't see it!!!

All my clothes still fit the same and when I look in the mirror, there doesn't appear to be any kind of a change. I was a light-weight with only 102 lbs. to lose so I'm discouraged that I've lost 1/3 of it and can't tell at all!! Any thoughts or suggestions or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. I am so bummed!    — Amy K. (posted on February 7, 2003)

Hi there, Amy! I know this may not be very encouraging, but I did not see any difference until I had lost over 50 lbs. My husband, my Mom and my niece all kept saying that they could see such a huge difference but I just couldn't. We always hear of others who have lost 100 plus lbs and still feel and see the "heavy" person they started out as. I'm not saying that you are doing this, but most of the time we have on image fixed in our minds and it is very hard to get rid of this image. You will see the difference, please don't give up hope. Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down 101 lbs.

Hi Amy. Did you take your measurements pre-op? Even though you can't see the weight loss I bet you have already started to lose inches. I am also out 3wks and have lost 27 lbs. and although my clothes don't feel much different, I've lost 1.5 inches in my waist and I'm sure more inches other places. Also, I can tell in my face and my watch and rings are looser. Give it a week or two and you will really be able to see it! Lisa

I didn't notice a change until 10 weeks out (-45 out of 100)

Hey sweetie, I know just how you feel. I'm 4 months post-op and have lost 74 lbs. and just strated to see the difference. I also didn't move out of sizes until I was about 40 lbs. gone. But once I did, I had to get new clothes every 2 weeks. From a size 26 to a 16 already. You will start going down in sizes, believe me. One way to beat this besides taking your measurments, is to take pictures of yourself every 10-15 lbs. loss. With or without clothes is your choice. Then measure them up side by side. I recently did this to myself and almost fell out of my chair. It really helps put it into perspective. And although its nice to hear from family members how great you look, it feels better to hear it from a complete stranger. Good luck sweetie.

Amy, Remember that heavy people do not wear anything that is too restricting, if restricting at all i.e, elastic waist bands, so of course you are not going to "feel" a difference in your clothes for a while. Do not despair. Excersice and I suggest measuring yourself. Congrats on your surgery and the weight you have lost so far. I wish I was on your side of the fence. I am still pre-op.

I know how you feel! I have lost 112 pounds since August 2002, and a lot of the time I think I look the same as I did pre-op. It's a weird body image thing a lot of us go through. Other people tell me all the time how different I look, but I can't tell! It's weird! :o)
