Question:
Staple Line Disruption?
I had open RNY sixteen months ago. Started at 360 ish and lost about 105 pounds in the first 10 months. In the past six months, I have stayed the same. I asked my doc about the possibility of a staple line disruption. He says he can run a test but it costs $500. I do not have insurance and am hesitant about paying for a test I mau not need. Can anyone who has experienced something similar tell me what you did? Also, what are the symptoms of a staple line distruption. Also, is it possible for me to lose another 80 pounds to reach goal? — Rachel R. (posted on March 10, 2003)

Hi, I had SLD with my original rny and had to go back for a second surgery
to be transected. Were you transected with your original surgery? Do you
find you can eat a lot more than before? Do you still get that heavy full
feeling when you overeat? When I had my SLD, I couldn't get full and could
eat 2 lean cuisines. There were no symptoms other than eating more. I had
a little bit of heartburn but nothing major. If you want to read more
detail, you can read my two profiles. God bless you! I had my SLD
confirmed by Upper GI.

I could not eat appreciably more, but I had a sudden return of acid and
pain in pouch. It, in turn, made me nauseated, so I didn't eat all that
much, so didn't gain back hugely. I was 5 yrs post-op. We do not
"pop" our staples. The body does its utmost to return to normal.
Mine was diagnosed via endoscopy. Some have pain, some have weight gain,
some have both. Although it did require another surgery, it was uneventful
and OH SO WORTH IT.
