Question:
Muscle and feet soreness

I am 2-1/2 months post op RNY and have lost 48 lbs. (down from starting weight of 268. My leg muscles have been very stiff, sore and achy. My feet hurt and are extremely sore especially right after getting up from sleeping or sitting. I can't be on my feet for long periods of time because they hurt too much. I thought weight loss should make your feet less sore but mine has gotten worse since the surgery. I'm wondering if maybe I'm lacking in some vitamins or minerals, I take 2 Flintstone chewables, Viactive calcium chews and started taking B12 500mcg sublingual tablets 2 weeks ago. I haven't had any tests for nutrient levels yet and also need to know how soon I should have that done. I will be calling my dr. about this but wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions?    — Patty H. (posted on July 11, 2004)

Patricia, I went thru the same thing with the muscle and joint pain after I had lost about 70 pounds. I felt like I was 90 but after about a month, it cleared up. I read on this web site that it could be caused by the body shifting to accomodate the weight loss. Changing center of gravity, etc. It seems it was that for me. As far as the vitamins go, based on all I've been told, you should switch to a calcium citrate rather than carbonate. The viactiv chews have carbonate and apparently we don't absorb that. I take calcium citrate with vitamin D because that helps with absorpiton. My doctor ordered blood work at 3 months but I know that can be different with different doctors. I also switched from the Flintstone's because they are not complete enough for adults. I take the over the counter pre-natal vitamin because my nutritionist and bariatric coordinator told me they are the most complete vitamin.

I would like to suggest you change from the viactive to a calcium citrate that your body will absorb better. Whole Foods sells a chewable calcium citrate that is good. Also Centrum makes a chewable multivitamin that works well for adults. Also remember your body is still healing.
