Question:
Has anyone experienced a weight gain with Zoloft and Effexor XR?

I am 11 months post op and have been on Zoloft and Effexor XR for 3 and half months, all of a sudden I am insatiable. I drink no less than a gallon of water a day because of the extreme thirst/dry mouth symptom from the meds. I just can't seem to stay full, I'm ALWAYS hungry. I've gained 9 pounds in the last month and prior to that was on a 4 month plateau. Is it the meds making me hungry, or is it maybe water weight as a side effect of the meds? Please help me solve this dilemma, I feel like my window of opportunity has closed. Any suggestions?    — corpdiva2006 (posted on January 27, 2002)

I am on Effexor XR and haven't gained weight, but I feel it may have slowed my weight loss down. I'm 1 yr. 3 wks. post- op - RNY open. I've lost 101 lbs. I am feel insatiable some days too and think it may be because I'm not eating enough protein. When I do eat enough protein at meals & snacks I'm not hungry and don't even think of food, but when I don't get that protein I want to graze and that will make us gain weight. Good luck!

I am pre-op, but have been on Zoloft for 3 years. It WILL make you gain weight. I've gained about 40 lbs.+ since I started on this medication, but for me, the lack of side effects is worth the weight gain. Just watch your weight, or talk to your doctor about a different med. Good luck!

A friend of mine who is 3 years post op just had the same problem. I will find out from her what she switched to. A word of caution: she gained around 40 pounds in a 6 month period of time! Her problem was the Effexor. Whatever she is on now has given her no problems but she is working very hard to get the weight off. I wouldn't wait to long to do something. The good thing is there are other options. Good Luck!

Ronni -- You are EXACTLY right! I crave carbs something fierce, bread, crackers, etc. I read that a supplement of Chromium Piccolinate or Brewer's Yeast will tame the cravings. What about the extreme hunger though. What's that about? Is it the meds? What else should I have my psychiatrist try? What about Wellbutrin?

Good Heavens!! I never thought about it but I have put on 25 lbs in the past 5 months and I started the Zoloft 5 mos ago too! I couldnt figure it out I have really chged my eat habits, tried to eat healthier but the weight seems to keep piling on. Now at 340 and still fighting with the insurence company these last 25 lbs are almost crippling me. I will defianlty be making an appt with me pcp tomorrow!!

Please be very careful if ever planning to go off of Effexor. My sister (takes for anxiety) has been trying for a month now and the side effects are horrendous. She also said her Doctor never mentioned the possible weight gain (I sent her this question- in case she had expirienced any)- nor the HELL of withdrawals she is expiriencing. She asked that I share this information with the site. I know most of us would not consider dropping a med without our Dr.s knowlegde-however- I just wanted to share how horrible it's been for her.

Karen, what side effects did your sister have? I have seriously considered going off the Effexor. I was afraid of the potential side effects. I just don't know what they are. Any info you could share would be great! Adrienne

I have been on both and hated Effexor. I am now on Zoloft and love it! I find that I am actually less hungry..but then again I have not had the surgery yet and I am hoping that the Zoloft will not change whats going on internally after the surgery!
