Question:
I am 5 months post op and have only lost 60 lbs.

I lost 50 lbs the first 3 months. The four and fifth month I have only lost 10 lbs. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I still need to lose 50 more lbs. — Carolyn S. (posted on October 27, 2004)

Hi Carolyn! You are doing great! People lose at different speed, but the important thing is that you are losing....60 or 70 pounds in 5 months is phenomenal!!! I have been at a standstill now for about 5 months, but did lose 140 lbs. in one year and 2 months. I would still like to lose another 20 lbs, but am not going to lose any sleep over it - as long as we follow our doctor's directions, get in the water, and as much exercise that we can handle, we are going to beat this thing called obesity! Keep up the good work, and may your journey continue to be as successful as it is now! You are doing wonderful, in my opinion.

ONLY!! My goodness girl but when was the last time that you lost 50# IN 5 MONTHS! That is real good, keep in mind everyone looses at their own rate. But, take a real good long look at your diet, water intake and your exercise, have you slacked off on any of these. If you have it is time to get back to basics. If you are not exercising then it is time to get thy butt in gear. You take it from here.

Carolyn: You have done fantastic. We all hit plateaus. I hit one at 4 months and 66lbs. Your body must adjust to the weight loss. You need to change something you are doing, what you eat, when you eat, exercise more. It will start again, mine did. Good luck...judy

I just hit 8 months postop and am at a standstill at 66 lbs. I have lost I think 4 lbs since 9/1. I want to lose another 45 lbs. I feel your frustration, but look at that you are still losing. Exercise, eat right, and try to relax over the weight loss (I know, much easier said than done). It will come off. Good luck! Shannon Open RNY 2/25/04 251/185/140

Every pound lost is a good pound, I always say. Congrats! What exactly is your regimen? What do you eat/avoid? What are you doing in water, protein supps, vitamins?

I stopped losing at 8 months post op, having lost about 65 lbs. I am almost 2 years post op and cannot get the scale to budge, no matter what I do. I think I will have to stop eating altogether to lose anymore. That being said, I was 46 when I had surgery and had a BMI of about 41 - so, a lightweight like you! I had been morbidly obese all my life. I think some of us just are not meant to be "little". At this point in my life, I am going for healthy - my B/P is normal, lipids are great, I do some sort of cardio exercise every day and do weight training 3-4 times per week. I am in the best physical shape in my life. I can wear normal sized clothes. My PCP is happy with where I am, and even told me so, even if I never lost another pound. Bottom line - you may not be doing anything wrong! Keep doing what you know is right, and if you are meant to lose more weight, it will come off - you have the rest of your life to work on it! I think you are doing great.

Hi Carolyn, 60 Lbs in 5 months - what a great job! I would just continue whatever you're doing. It is working. I started at 251 and lost pretty similar to you. I am 1 year out & down 114 lbs now. The further months out the less total weight I would lose per month. Your body needs time to adjust & remember you're probably losing sizes when your not dropping pounds. Take care - Judy

WHEN WILL WE STOP COMPARING OURSELFS WITH OTHERS! If you are eating what you should be eating and exercising don't worry about it. What do you think will happen once you reach that magic number? We put to much stress on ourselfs. You may want to look at your exercise routine. Remember, as we get lighter we need to work harder (more weights, faster walks, etc.). Keep a log of when , were and what you are eating. Same for exercise. See if some bad habits have not come back.

I know what you're feeling.. Its hard not to compare yourself to others when you are on the "slow" side of losing. I'm 6.5 months out and have lost 80 pounds. But you know what???? I have NEVER in my life lost more than 36 pounds on ANY diet so i'm twice as far ahead as I ever was any other time. I get discouraged sometimes too but keep your chin up and keep working at it..it will happen. If you need daily encouragement..email me privately. [email protected] You're doing great. 12 pounds a month is healthy and steady! Faith

Hi there! Your profile doesn't say much about your height or beginning weight, but I'll lay odds you are a shorty who started in the 220's, 230's or 240's - am I close?
Anyhow, I also had only lost 60 lbs. at 19-20 weeks (five months), and was somewhat discouraged because i kept reading how about how everyone ELSE was doing so much better than me. I tried to figure out what *I* was doing so wrong, but it turns out, it was just how my body wanted to lose. I am now 15 months out, and have lost 102+ lbs (lost 100 lbs. by 13 months).
I think the real reason post-ops get so concerned with how slow they're losing is because we're always secretly worried that *you* will be the exception - you will be the person the surgery *didn't* work for. At around 11 months post-op, I stopped caring. I had lost over 80 lbs and finally accepted that the surgery DID work, and it was still working for me.
Keep your chin up. It will happen for you, too, just like it's happened for everyone else. It just won't happen overnight. Enjoy what you have lost, and realize that you will continue to lose weight. I wish you continued success! (Open PROXIMAL RNY, 7/7/03, 5'1", 227/124/115)
