Question:
8 weeks out, having extreme GERD
Is anyone else having this problem? I had GERD prior to surgery, but NOTHING like it is now! Thanks in advance for the info. — jengrz (posted on January 14, 2003)

HI,, before WLS I had such acid reflux (gerd). I was living on Tums,,
especially at night. My surgeon has me taking one Pepcid AC every morning,
and I havent had nothing, its great. I can eat hot spicy stuff and no

I HAD really bad GERD prior to surgery, but now it is completely gone. The
drug I took before for my GERD was PROTONIX...if you want to get rid of
your GERD, ask your doctor to prescribe it. It works beautifully. My
surgeon told me that since surgery I'm no longer mechanically ABLE to
reflux, so maybe you had a different surgery or my surgeon did something

Call your surgeon. A woman in my support group had really bad GERD
symptoms a few weeks out of surgery and it turned out to be a stricture
caused by adhesions, and she needed surgery to correct it. Like the others
said, our pouches don't contain acid, so you shouldn't have GERD.

Hi, I am 8 weeks out and actually yes there still is a minimal amount of
acid in your pouch and it isnt often one gets an acid build up after
surgery but it DOES happen. As always recommended talk with your surgeon.
I had GERD severe prior to surgery and at 7 weeks was doubled over with
stomach pains due to that wee bit of acid (your digestive juices) swirling
around in there. I was put on prevacid and carafate....for 2
weeks...prevacid is to help with controlling the acid and the carafate
coats...I am off prevacid now but must continue the carafate for another
month and the results are going very well. Never let anything you are
feeling go for too long without being checked out. I hope this helps.
